Singleplayer = online but dont meet real players and take less bandwidth.
Friends/private groups/Coop = play with 1000's of friends.
Open play = free for all able to meet/fight anyone.
All options needs to be played online no matter what.
But singleplayer you can teather though you're mobile if you so wished as it takes very little bandwidth.
You can play solo, group or open.
You still need a connection to the net for each mode.
When was it broken
When they announced they were scrapping it just before release.
I play in open and rarely see other players, even if I do, we are just ships that pass in the night, and I prefer it that way.
I loathe MP usually but find "open" a breath of fresh air.
Solo *is* there if you want nothing to do with anyone.
As to being perma connected, its not as draconian as it sounds and if you have a normal internet connection it wont impact you in any way.
Im sure there's the 1pc with terribad net etc and I feel for you but for the 99pc of others it's fine.
To be honest, when I did first hear of always on, I too was "hmmm that doesnt sound like it's for me" but I just dont notice it. Its no more invasive than any other MP system and if it keeps pirates out im all for it.

There is no DRM. You require a constant Internet connection to update the universe around you.
Wait till the servers go down, and we'll see if it's still "not as draconian as it sounds".
In a few years you'll be able to playe Elite, Frontier, and First Encounters... but you won't be able to playe Elite: Dangerous.
That draconian enough for you?
