Played a non-VR FPS for the first time in almost a year...
The last time I played a proper non-VR FPS was last Spring some time, or maybe even before that. I can't even remember. It's been awhile at any rate.

I was feeling nostalgic so I decided to load up Rainbow Six: Vegas 2. This is a game I've previously put a couple hundred hours into; yet it felt weird to try to play it again. Trying to use the mouse to aim everything just felt so off. I truly didn't know how to properly aim with a mouse anymore.

After a few moments I started to get some of it back. Yet even then everything felt a bit off. I wasn't just out-of-practice. Rather, it felt like there was a veil of restriction over everything I did. There was no nuance to anything.

For example, take crouching. You want to crouch, you press crouch and you crouch. You want to stand, then you stand. That's it. Standing or crouching. No in-between, no partial crouch, no slowly peaking over cover. Just two basic options. Was FPS gaming always this simplistic?

Even more jarring was the realization how many things I couldn't do. For example, I came upon a railing on a rooftop. I wanted to peak over the edge of the roof to see if any bad guys were below. I couldn't do it. The game flat-out wouldn't let me peak over the edge. What the hell game, why won't you let me peak over the railing?

After spending the better part of a year in VR games, I realize how much more freeing VR is. It's not just the fact that everything is life-sized. It's not the sheer immersion of feeling like you're in another environment. It's the subtleties. It's being able to choose between a half-way crouch, a 3/4 way crouch, a fast-drop to prone, a slow rise to your feet. It's being able to carefully lean around cover or peer over a ledge. It's being able to fall flat on my back with a pistol in the air facing straight up as I shoot at bad guys on the roof.

I can't believe how restrictive non-VR first-person gaming really is. And I can't believe we put up with it for so long.

Long live VR gaming.

I've got into Conan exiles and hardly touched the vive since, although it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hot here and not the most comfortable thing to have strapped to your face in the heat.
