"What is Trine 2?"
The very first question someone asked me about Trine 2 was: "What is Trine 2?"
And I kid you not folks, I looked at the person and tried desperately to not shout out loud "YOU DON'T KNOW TRINE 2!???" To be frank, I just calmly(I'm serious) told the person it's a 3 player co-op action/adventure/small rpg/ side scrolling platformer game in a 2.5D environment with gorgeous graphics and puzzling puzzles to test your mettle on.
The sequel to Frozenbyte's earlier title Trine, Trine 2 builds upon it's predecessor foundations and game-play by flushing it all out. By means of adding even more graphical options and making the game stand out aesthetic wise to fit the side scrolling theme. The rpg skills you earn have been expanded so you can learn more than the limited amount you can spend points on in the first game. The puzzles you thought were easy in Trine 1 are perhaps significantly harder(just a little wee bit hard, depending if you can handle the mental strain) Granted it's not intensive as puzzles as the Portal franchise from Valve. Rather the puzzles are just there to halt your progress and think about in a minute or two on how to solve it.
Story wise our three unfortunate(Or fortunate in finding trouble along the way) main protagonists find themselves entangled with a princess to save her kingdom from evil...
BORING! Would've been your first impression of it, but it's far from a simple adventure to save a kingdom. Far from it indeed. There are documents hidden in chests scattered throughout the levels to provide further back story on the game itself. Which is invaluably precious in providing insight onto the simple task assigned above by a princess. I'll leave the rest to your imagination to see how the story will unfold... 3 Heads are better than 2? or 1?
I played Trine 2 with 2 other friends of mine and had an absolute blast of a time enjoying the co-op aspect and coordinating with each other to advance to the next level. With the occasional friendly fire I accidently(sometimes) hit them with. Unintentional though! I by no means am a sadistic friend who enjoys the torment of my friends dying before me... Moving on, the options to play in co-op are a lot. you can choose to turn off friendly fire(don't turn this mode off when playing with friends to enjoy their suffering), turning off the option to lift your comrades with boxes, or put on classic mode and stick with one character, or cheat and have the ability to choose on the fly a different character.
3 Shield-Bro's!? No problem. Let's shield our way!
3 Thieves!? Lots of swinging vines here and there...
3 Wizards!? Oh, the Box and Plank madness ensues!!!
^ Or perhaps you young adventurers want to dabble and mix and match.
2 Knights and 1 mage
2 Thieves and 1 knight
2 Mages and 1thief
Go play with the combinations and pick whichever one suit your needs.
Honestly, the game has much more appeal and replay ability if you play with a friend locally or in multiplayer, or if you're a gamer who likes playing it solo by all means do so! It depends on your play style of course. Just remember to get the most enjoyment of the experience my friend! An arrow passes through the air at deadly speed nearly nicking off her companion shield-bro's ear. Undeterred by the onslaught of arrows from the shield-bro's companion he continues on, while in passing says to the thief; "And watch where you aim those arrow!"
The thief only shrugs.
Shaking his head softly, he continued onwards on the path, bravely with naught a hint of fear. He charges straight into a path of goblins barring their path. Knowing such large army impedes their way the shield bro merely tells him companions...
"I shall clear the way!"
Sprinting his large body with a big beer belly under his armor he continues to charge straight towards the goblins...
...Only to find them in cages?
Befuddled, the shield-bro looks in wonder at how such goblins had become entrapped in such wooden cages.
"Too slow, my friend," says the wizard. His ever grin plastered on his face like a devil.
the ensuing cry of an angered knight echoed loudly in the valley that day...
-An excerpt from the adventures of 3 friends in the world of Trine 2... Sometimes all you need are friends by your side against a perilous journey of the ages.
