Very high quality:
Kingdom Rush
Kingdom Rush Frontiers
Orcs Must Die
Orcs Must Die 2

Good quality:
Super Sanctum TD
Defense Grid 1
Revenge of the Titans

Inferior quality:
Gratuitous Tank/Space Battles
Defender's Quest
Sol Survivor

Horrible quality (at least 1 major crippling flaw, or just all around bad):
Anything Bloons
iBomber
Unstoppable Gorg
There are way too many horrible TD games to list the rest...

Also check out Infested Planet. Not really that much -like- DW but very much -good- like DW and also a highly replayable and fun defense game by a good game designer.

I’ll simply list the games I’ve enjoyed and recommend.

Defender's Quest: Valley of the Forgotten (DX edition)
(Hard)
Really really good game, but hard to 100% (NG+)
Some silly and frustrating puzzles plus one (optional) level.

Orcs Must Die
(HARDER)
Is a really really good game, but is extremely hard to 100% (NG+)
I strongly prefer the original game.

Dungeon Defenders 1
(BRUTAL)
Magical. For what looks like an utter kid’s game, is a seriously deep hardcore strategy coop game. The basic game is amazing, and range of content wonderful… But the difficulty gets simply abusive: requiring players to grind and farm for weeks? Because you need to be a higher level to use the more powerful items, which you can’t earn because the difficulty is truly unreachable. The bonus from items completely dwarfs the bonus from being a high level. And you absolutely need the stupid bloody items because the game got so f##### hard...

Dungeon Defenders is a long slow grind first and a hero/tower defense game second.

And it's such a bad game I didn't even want to list it.
Unstoppable Gorg is not a Bad Quality game.. it's just not as easy as most TD games and it's mainly nostalgia ...of the 40's and 50's.
It takes being quick and you cannot sit back and watch... you are constantly active spinning something.. and crying LMAO.. well at least i do lol :steammocking:

Some alternative recommendations:

Cubemen (crazy crazy stuff)
Defense Grid 1 (good story, narration, kickstarter backed)
Defense Grid 2 (nowhere near as good as 1)
Defend your Life: TD (pretty standard but well executed TD)
Field Runners 1
Field Runners 2 (interesting puzzle TD levels)
Prime World: Defenders (uses a randomised card upgrade system)
Warstone TD (early access, difficult, town based upgrade system)
Sanctum 1 (3rd person)
Sanctum 2 (3rd person)
Super Sanctum TD (a 2D 'old school' sprite-based isometric version of Sanctum,)

Also, IMHO dungeon warfare is better than all of them for replay value and sheer fun.

Regarding dungeon defenders, I had to stop playing that game because they make you start your strategy from scratch every time you restart. And it can't be done quickly in overhead top down, you gotta walk around a HUGE map (3rd person) and place every single tower. #%!%Ing terrible design decision, or maybe that was intended.

Lots of major errors in your post but the main one I have to point out is that Super Sanctum TD is NOT a "top down version of Sanctum" in that its neither top down (that view is called 'isometric') nor has almost anything to do with the 3D Sanctum TD/shooter hybrid games except maybe some lore.

And Field Runners is complete, total, steaming feces. It isn't garbage, because garbage theoretically has some redeeming value as it could be picked through to find something of worth. Field Runners has no worth.

And I put some hours in Prime World Defenders before realizing it was structured to be an endless grind with almost no content. But it isn't total trash like Field Runners.

I stand corrected, super sanctum TD is ISOMETRIC, my bad. It's also developed by coffee stain studios, the same ones that created sanctum 1 and 2. The Trailer to super sanctum TD on the store page has charactor models from sanctum 1 and 2. The sprites in super sanctum TD are of the enemies from Sanctum.

So in summary:
The game super sanctum TD is a re-imagining of 3D 'accelerated' Sanctum into a 2D 'sprite-based' isometric, old school tower defense game. Using artistic concepts from the original sanctum game.

As for field runners, that came around years ago, in the early stages of IOS. What did you expect?

Field runners 2 is vastly improved, with interesting puzzle levels (thats why I mentioned that bit). its also one of the few TD where you create the path as the level progresses, rather than just place towers.

Prime world is a grindy game, but it spices it up with randomised 'loot' that you combine and create, to upgrade the towers, which i think is unique for a TD. Unlike dungeon defenders that literally wastes your time.

Your best choice is the GemCraft series. The progression and structure is similar to Dungeon Warfare. Easily 100+ hour games.
Rabob Dec 31, 2017 @ 8:56am
Bloons TD? Nobody mentioned this? :|

Plants versus Zombies is also a TD somewhat.
Then there is Orcs must die Unchained. Which in some respect offers more than OMD1/2.

Defenders Quest is good.
