Is it possible to use showhud like this?
I tried out the showhud command and its pretty cool and would actually be playable if I could still see the map and tactical overlay. So then I thought maybe it would be possible to setup a bind/script thing where after you disable the hud with showhud, when you press the map key or the tactical view key it reenables it so you can see the info and disables again when you release the key. Think something like this would be possible? The game looks way better without all the useless icons and text messages all over the place...

Yes, it is definitely possible.

If you want to map it to, say, the map key, type this in the console:
setbind m showhud

That would make it so M not only toggles the overhead map, but the hud as well.

Hmm I couldn't get it to work the way I want. I have overhead map set to c key. So if I bind showhud to c it just takes the map bind away. How I want it to work is like this, the game starts out with showhud off, when I hold down the tactical view I want to see the info and when I release the key I want it to go back to nohud. Same for map when I hold down map key I want the map to show and go back to nohud when I release. So I think I would need to bind the 2 actions to each key. Would like it to work without toggling (just holding down the key brings up the map or tactical info and releasing hides it)

There are ways to do that for sure, but I just don't know exactly how to do so. There is a way to do multiple binds to a key, but I forget the syntax.
I believe it involves this character: |
