Behind enemy lines
They really screwed this game when they put this in that you can't be behind enemy lines. Dumbed the game down even more. Way to go. LOL.

Actually, you can. You just suck. In fact, I'm reminded of a little ditty from my Stalingrad days...

Bridges, TWG campaign. The squad of Ivans I'd been anxiously watching for the last half minute stampeded past me, feet just mere inches away from my face, before promptly getting gunned down in the river, their blood turning the chill blue stream into a thick, stinking red swamp filled with the submerged screams of the dying.

I took another long, cautious look around before slowly crawling out of the small patch of shrub I'd been hiding in, just barely tall enough to cover my head. And then I saw it; there, crested on a small hill a few feet away from me, the rusted monstrosity of war forged from metal and diesel roared, sending another shell falling into one of our hastily dug trenches.

I still swear that I heard them scream for a split second, over the artillery, over the guns, over the sloshing of boots in mud, over the heroic battlecries of men fighting for their homes, before just another explosion in the Red Orchestra took them to their rest.

I pushed onward. I had to. I crawled through bugs and dirt and corpses for what felt like miles, artillery from both sides showering me with dust and gravel. By the time I was close to the T-34, the shell casings of enemy machinegunners pelted my back like hail.

Once I had finally reached the hill, tiny pebbles cutting into my hands and knees, the crew had conveniently stopped their barrage to reload. I ripped the pin on my antitank grenade out with my teeth, jumped onto my feet, and...

Was promptly shot by a friendly, with the word "sorry" briefly passing by in the chat.

We lost.

I love this game.

As a squad leader, there is a wonderful hiding spot on Mamayev Kurgan (for defenders) that allows you to survive and spawn your squad behind enemy lines. The slaying from behind drives the enemy crazy!

To be on the receiving end of that is extremely frustrating, but it's oh-so satisfying to be the one dishing it out. It's also very satisfying to be the one responsible for stopping that attack from behind.

how did rising storm kill the player base?
Corn Crisis Apr 4, 2014 @ 12:29am
actually I would say that before RS came out there was quite a lul in the activity on the servers, it seemed like fewer and fewer people were playing every week, but once RS came out the player base exploded. Of course most people got bored and left but I'd say that we have more people now than we did right before RS, though that could just be my perception. I don't exactly have any numbers. Also people seem generally nicer now, though a little less organized I will admit.

The point of Red Orchestra has always been to show off the lesser known battles, specifically the Eastern Front, instead of latching onto the exact same cut and paste D-Day maps that littered every single WW2 shooter back in the day (see: Iwojima.) It's unique in that by far it's the only WW2 game to ever portray the sides fighting in Stalingrad as something other than a bunch of cowering teenagers being sent straight into machinegun fire and nothing but diehard nazis, and gives the footsoldiers on both the Axis and Allies the respect they deserve, hence the title.

Say what you want about the bugs, the level ups, and the attachments, but RO2 kept that mood fairly well.

And then Rising Storm comes in, flips over the table, pulls out its sniper and starts noscoping scrubs. The entire marketing campaign for this monstrosity (which was originally supposed to be a completely free mod with no official ties to Tripwire) was based around the exact kind of AMERICA LAND OF THE FREE AMERICA IS DOMINATE tripe you saw around the time Call of Duty jumped from a mediocre-ish WW2 FPS into the terrible, terrible abomination we all know and hate today, and that's why veterans both despise and are terrified of it. It sacrifices the amazing atmosphere that it had for the sake of making the player feel like an unstoppable machine of war, slaughtering foreign peoples in the name of FREEDOM by the hundreds (unless they're unlucky enough to end up on the terribly unbalanced, non-American side, but that's for another time and another place.)

For a quick comparison, google "Red Orchestra kill montage". Now google the same for Rising Storm. You'll quickly notice that, even though they existed before, there weren't as many, and they didn't have the production values, attention, and praise they do now.

I've seen a disturbing new trend with the debut of Rising Storm where people who didn't manage to snag a TL/SL role will find and threaten the TL for his automatic, and have the balls to TK him for it if he rightfully refuses, with the server unanimously being on the TKer's side. (The same goes for officers purely concerned about K/D instead of spawns, smoke, and arty.)

I've ran into people who legitimately think this game is set during 'Nam.

The frequency of newbies not only taking up valuable officer roles with little to no knowledge of the game, but also ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ out people for actually trying to help them, has increased tenfold.

Machinegunners treat the role like they're Rambo with downs syndrome.

Snipers don't know how to dial sights.

People flip the ♥♥♥♥ out over somebody being sorry and taking all the blame for accidental TKs.

All of this really doesn't really help the fact that In Country is on the way, and that Tripwire might make it official DLC while granting none of the quality control a mod turned priced product should have, ala Rising Storm.

The Pacific theater is really overlooked in Europe though. The only thing I got to hear about it in History classes, was Pearl Harbor and the Atomic bombs, with the European theater getting most of the attention. Even Stalingrad got more content in the books here than the battles in the Pacific. For Europeans, it is pretty interesting in finding out about the Pacific war.

Dunno how you keep having ♥♥♥♥ luck with Rising Storm though. I get the idea that on European servers the American team is full of clueless idiots with no sense of teamwork or oblivious survival instinct, while the Japanese team almost always has good teamwork going on, along with the right communication, and if an idiot takes the TL spot, he gets booted off that spot fairly quickly. Doesn't stop that I have been TK'ed some times just because some dishonorable crapmuncher wanted my Nambu T100. At least I am lucky because all the solo rambo idiots pick the American team 90% of the time. And disorganized teams are way easier to pick off.

As mentioned above Pacific is pretty obscure compared to Europe, operation market garden, Ardenne offensive, hell even Stalingrad gets more then twice the attention here.

As for the game. I don't see this amazing inbalance. Japanese rifles hit harder and more accurate while starting with a bayonet. Their pistol has more rounds while lacking in power. Their SMG outperforms the Thompson in almost all areas. I think they're balanced fine but they require more tactical skill then the USA. The USA is more noob friendly but I can't remember ever encountering someone TKing SLs and TLs for their guns...

Overal yes the USA wins more, but then again the attackers win most of the time and Japan is generally the defenders. The dynamic is different from the East Front but personally I prefer the Pacific precisely for it's a-symmetry.

I won't argue about the team killing, but I will say for Rising Storm both sides are ballanced. What matters is the team leader, and how well the officers and the team leader work together.
I've played a few Rising Storm matches on the Japanese side under the BEST commander I, and others, have ever seen (unfortunately he disconnected on the last one, so I couldn't get his ID).

Was it cause most of the people born in the "home of the brave, land of the free" hid their asses until '44, or cause they could only fight bolt-action rifle-bearing Japanese with nuclear bombs? Or maybe it's because battle of Stalingrad decided the fate of the world, when the most courageous stood up for what was right and when even the "greatest" of Europe shivered in fear sheltered by sea or were helping the nazis?

Though I respect the US for fighting over three Islands they only needed to further their military involvement in Asia for years to come, the whole Pacific theatre comes nowehere even close to a simple battle over a small town in Eastern front.

Let's be realistic here.

I totally get though why they tell way more of the war close to our homes, and into our lands.
Even so, Stalingrad got not the prime spot in the history books here. The prime spots got taken by the Blitz of London, D-Day, the failure of Market Garden and the following faminewinter in the countries still occupied by the Germans (especially North Netherlands), and the end of the European war and the rebuilding efforts. Stalingrad gets noted though as the turning point on the Eastern front, with an enormous death toll on both sides, but not too much details about how desperate the fighting was in there. And going off more detailed reports and RO2, it was safely to say: World War Two was hell. The Battle of Stalingrad was War is even worse than hell.

hows it the americans fault that the japanese used bolt action rifles lol

ok first of all, the game doesn't give respect to the axis soldiers, it just puts them in a very neutral light -altlugh still vaugly mentions their atrocities ("remember what the fascist occupant is doing to us" "remember bataan, you do not want to get captured by these ♥♥♥♥" etc)

and im terribly sorry fellow brony but the whole complaint about rising strom is utter BS.
stupid people exist in both games, so many times in stalingrad my team had a tl that just picked a class for the SMG and sls that just kept dying because they tried to go rambo.

same applies to the atmosphere, it still feels real, it still feels like a horrible war and it doesn't allow anyone be "unstobble" any more than stalingrad did with the MKB and AVT.
the japanese side is balanced and has its own great advatages.

the pasific theatre, as others told you already is lesser known and only COD:WaW really did it justice over all these years.
there is no "murica land of free pow pow" they didn't invade and "kill natives" they fought an evil empire that can be considered even worse than the germans.

it just looks like you really hate americans from some reaon and decided to hate RS just because they added them

the only complaint i have with RS is that the maps are too leniar and get boring after a while with the stalingrad maps a lore more dynamic
but that's gonna change when the new RS maps will be added alongside the transports

Footsoldiers fighting for their homes =/= genocidal, Hitler worshipping SS generals.

I'm not a brownie. And even though terrible team players existed before, the problem was never as big or as accepted as it is now.

Stalingrad was the battle that decided the turn of the war, with everybody on both sides fighting for the survival of their very people (look up what Hitler had planned for the Soviet ehtnicities if he had won, the historical war crimes of the Soviets during the push to Berlin, etc). In comparison, Rising Storm is just another day on the job for the marines. English voice translations for the Japanese were lazily left out, only serving to further dehumanise them. Those special abilities you mentioned need clan level play to be used effectively, which leaves plain bolt action vs semi-automatic, which means the semi-auto is gonna win.

I can understand your point about lack of focus on the Pacific and Imperial Japan being even worse than Nazi Germany, but that still doesn't excuse the portrayal of literally every single Japanese soldier as a brainwashed, evil foreigner.

I'm American, and proud of it. I just know that we have flaws, just like everyone else.

Linear maps are meant to appeal to the Alienware using fratboy/Day Z kiddie crowd that Rising Storm was marketed at. Vehicles are gonna be buggy as all hell and used only by trolls.
