as far as i see it's just a novelty thing to when board or when you want to hop over trenches.
any other use for this feature? in other FPS's you could jump while firing to confuse the enemy but in this game its not possible.

Sometimes I jump just to spot enemies over a wall or something tall. Like you mentioned jumping over trenches, I'll do the same in some area's if it speeds up my advance like down stairs ect.

Jumping over trenches is much faster than dropping into it and then climbing up the other side.. but no, there isn't a use other than that.

Diving, on the other hand, is extremely useful.

Jumping helps climbing places you wouldn't get to otherwise.
