Is this supposed to work in Ubuntu?
It works if I plug it in directly using an USB cable - but apparently the dongle isn't registered at all?

I was sure that this was one piece of hardware that would work out of the box in Linux.

I'm on Ubuntu 15.10 daily build - so it could be an issue with that specific version. Anyone on 15.04?

Same problem on 14.04. Just tried it with the cable, mouse moves and buttons work but big picture still doesn't detect it so I'm guessing it's in this mouse/keyboard mode at this point.

I think you're right - it's probably just mouse/keyboard mode. Mine isn't detected properly either.

That's very disappointing.

You need to change some udev rules to get it to work. Either copy /lib/udev/rules.d/99-steam-controller-perms.rules from a Steam OS installation or create it with the following
#USB devices SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="28de", MODE="0666" # Oculus HID Sensor naming and permissioning KERNEL=="hidraw*", SUBSYSTEM=="hidraw", ATTRS{idVendor}=="2833", MODE="0666"

Thanks, cool110! That worked instantly!

Where did you get that information from? Was it from Valve themselves? (I searched, but couldn't find anything about it).

Got it working as well now, thanks.

It is from Valve but indirectly. File itself is from the Steam OS repo and I found it in the comments of this bug[bugs.launchpad.net] in Launchpad.

OK. I'm still disappointed that we have to go through this on Linux (at least they could make a proper sticky about it) - but at least it works.

Thanks again!

Thank you
thanks for the fix but I'm disappointed with valve.

This needs to be its own thread and made a sticky at the top of the forum.

thx cool110 that works for me.

Used you as a source for a wiki entry I applied at

Of course it's worth noting that we're all essentially last-minute beta testers (Valve recommends that we opt in to the beta version of Steam for now), so these kinks may be ironed out before the final release in November.

That's not an issue with Valve, it's an issue with your distro which happens to be Ubuntu. Only Ubuntu has the issue where the udev rules for Steam Hardware isn't there. Debian has had the rules set up ever since I could remember.

Udev rule is set if you just turn your steam client into beta!
Valve even wrote an email saying that:

"The first Steam Link and Steam Controller pre-order units are scheduled to arrive over the next few days.

We're eager to hear your feedback as we continue to make changes and improvements leading up to the full retail launch on November 10th. For the next few weeks, we recommend that you opt in to the Steam client beta (through the System settings panel in the Big Picture UI) so that you'll be running the most current fixes and functionality.

We'll be keeping an eye on forums everywhere, but we've also set up a contact email address for everyone on the team: SteamHardwareFeedback@valvesoftware.com. Whether you're having a great time or running into issues, we want to know.

Thank you"
