Total War: Shogun 2 won't even launch for the first time.
I just purchased the basic game (not the expansion) and downloaded it from steam. It won't even launch once. This is a brand new machine, running windows 7 x64 pro, and all other games run just fine. My DirectX 11 diag works and says all is good.
When I try to launch the game or even one of the benchmarking tools, it briefly flashes a screen (less than a second) which I can't even read, and then nothing. I can't run any of the DX9 or DX11 benchmark tools, I can't run benchmark game, and I can't play the game.

I've run the integrity check 3 times and it claims that there are no errors with the installation. I've restarted the computer and steam. Nothing has worked so far.

This game hasn't even worked once.

I'd really appreciate any input... it sucks to think this money went to complete waste, and that I'll never trust a Steam download again... any advice?

I am having a similiar problem, however it will start but it will close out when I attempt to fight a battle. Whats the problem how do you fix it?
It has nothing to do with windows, you need to make sure that you meet the specification that are given on the shogun case, you need to have a minimum of an intel dual core processor,
also a good internet speed, etc, check out the back of you game case and ma ke sure you meet the recommended specification , if it is then mabe your game is falty it happens , take it back to the chop they should replace it.
Maby try reinstalling the game?
I figured it out, but thanks everyone for your contributions.
is there any way to give the game more memory to make it run faster?
what was the fix?
I have the same problem ..... it' s about 10 weeks that i don't play , i try yesterday , but the game don't starts . i don't have similar problem with empire and napoleon . And last time i have played many time ago , everithig was well ....
Could be a problem of RAM. How many RAM do you have?. This game needs more. I have 6GB and run well. Could be also a problem of video card: check the compatibility with the specs of the game. In any case I have only DirectX10 and I can play without problem. Try to reduce the video detail of the game at the minimum possible: in this way should work. Than increase the detail step by step.

If you have problems getting Shogun 2 or Fall of the Samurai to start up, please try the following:

1) Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\total war shogun 2\redist
2) Run every .exe file there
3) Access the DirectX folder
4) Run the .exe file there
5) Restart your PC and run Shogun 2

Hey guys! This thread is old, but I think I found out how to make Shogun 2 work. I've experienced this too, I bought the retail version of the game and installed it. It didn't work for me no matter how many times I tried to Re-install it. But Yesterday I just opened my Laptop and Login in to Steam then before doing anything else I verified the Integrity of the Game Cache of Shogun 2. After waiting for at least 5-7 minutes the validation finished and when I run the game it worked :)). Try this It might be helpful. Good Luck!

how do you verify the game

Hey ryanelliotry, you verify the game by: First You go to your steam game library, then right-click the Total War: Shogun 2. Next choose properties, once you click the properties option a new tab wil appear, from there click the LOCAL FILES tab. Once you click it there will be four options that will appear, choose the option: VERIFY INTEGRITY OF GAME CACHE. Once you click it wait for a while then once it says all files successfully validated click the close button, then try playing Shogun 2 again.

That's about how I make mine work. Good luck and I hope you get to play the game!
