Veterans?
Well - Ive just started to put some serious thought into using veteran units (Yes, I know...) and I was recommended to start vetting some Black Bear units - I was wondering, how should I go about this, what level should I stop upgrading them, and what upgrades are perferable? Also, if there are better units to vet, information on them would be appreciated.

Currently I'm aiming for level 4 black bears with 2 upgrades in reload and accuracy.

There's no really good place to stop. Generally I stop when upgrading further would either (a) make the unit more expensive then the slot I want them in (i.e. cheap but dependable meat shield), and/ or (b) I can get a better unit for less. Upgrades depend on the army you're trying to fit them in.
I usually don't raise mine past 2-4 upgrades (max accuracy and max reload). You can go further and vet them up until you get rank 9 (I think) for extended accuracy. I chose all upgrades on Marines (moral, accuracy and reload) and never regreted it in any battle. Blackbears just aren't good enough for me to do that.
You can either enhance a units' strengths with upgrades, or try and ballance them out.
If you go with reload first then they get more shots down range faster, but no less accurate.
Good for mellee troops charging them, when volleys off count more then kills.
If you choose accuracy first, they will fire at the same speed, but get more kills per volley. This is more useful in line versus line, or line verses cavalry. Where you want less men on the field then the moral penalty.

Hm... Ok - But what Line Infantry should I vet? I heard Black Bears aren't worth vetting - I'm all about cost effectiveness. I planned to upgrade 2 Black Bears units to have 2 upgrades in Reload and 2 upgrades in accuracy. But after seeing that post about Black Bears not being worth it, I'm a bit indecisive.

No Line infantry is worth upgrading, except you skill them lvl9 with 150 Range and such units are just good on tight maps. On open maps you can play with unskilled lines and cav units, there is enough space to flank your enemie. I never use vet. Lines, because i use my marines lvl5 with 2 accurate, 2reload and 1 point on range. And if you want Black Bears with quicker Reload, its better to use the next Line infantry unit. For an example: Before i use Red Bears with 2 Reload skills, which cost 100 koku more, its better to use black bears for the same cost, because they are more accurate, moral, meele and reload speed.

I personally only vet Marines and the Imperial/ Shogunate infantry (normal) for line. It's up to you, everyone has a different play style.
Personally, I don't like black bears, except for fodder, or when I need a bunch of cheap line to anchor a flank/ throw at dojos.
I know people who've used them well. So before you take my word on it, try it out and see.

Hm, why do you like Imperial/Shogunate infantry? I mean, my level 3 Black Bears with 2 reload and 1 accuracy surpass their stats... I'm just wondering, is there something that makes them better, good to use, etc?

Their different guns. They can get volleys down range faster. And if I remember right their moral is better too -- but I haven't looked in a while.
I also find they just stay more in a line fight, and black bears have a tendency to break faster.

Hm... ok - Are they good Vanilla, or should they be vetted? I was planning on incorporating a Level 5 Royal Marine with 2 Accuracy, 2 Reload, and a Range upgrade into a army with 5-6 Imperial Infantry and 2 Yari Ki - Give or take some units, depending on Koku remaining... is that any good? Or should I bring another extended range unit, like a Tosa?

I mean, I just haven't found anything recent on army composition for FoTS - Its all inconclusive.

I wouldnt upgrade Line infantry at all. Imperial are good enough and every upgrade is less cost effective. You have 3 Elite Marines, who you can upgrade to lvl5 with better Range, thats enough. I use Red Bears in Combination with Imperials on the Flanks, Marines in the Center. But i prefer using strong cav so i take 4 yari ki lvl2, one bow cav and one sable cav. But i use this army just, when the map allows me enough space to flank.
