There use to be a official legal free version of arma 2 dubbed Arma 2 FREE in which the textures were low rez and you couldnt use mods but you were able to play the game for free nevertheless. The last working method to get it before they took it down due to arma 2 multiplayer shutting down was by steam db. Steam db can be used to call upon steam to install a game and since arma 2 FREE it should work. Try searching up Arma 2 FREE on steamdb. hope that helps. Multiplayer was shutdown a few years ago so it will be hard to find a server but last time i checked there was still one ran by AWG.
