Controller no longer works

I used to play this game with a wireless Xbox 360 controller; no problems at all. None. Now, I go to play it and controller won't work at all. I turn on controller in menu. Won't work. Re-install. No go. Is there any way to restore the controller functionality?

Don't wanna use xpadder or any of that kind of thing. If there's no other solution, I'll just bite the bullet and remember the game fondly.

It just came back; don't know what I did. On the second re-install maybe?
