A suprisingly good starwars game despite the glut of terrible ones produced by the late Lucas Arts. It has a very strange system that I have not seen in a game that I remember. You have the campaign map, but it is not static. You generate money pretty quick and the enemy can attack you at anytime. The land and space battles are similar to say what total war is on a much smaller and different scale, but there is no pause after on the campaign.
The difference in difficulty between the rebel campaign and the imperial campaign is huge. As the empire you should have no problem steam rolling the alliance. Imperial ships are heavily armored, carry free tie fighters, and have more fire power than most rebel ships. Your land units will also destroy people. ATATs can produce squads of free storm troopers meaning you have the best anti veicle and decent anti infantry that cost nothing.
The alliance campaign on the other hand can be frusturating. Get read to have the auto resolve tell you that your fleet can own 10 victory star destroyers only to play it out and be destroyed. Because you rely on figters so much, and the Y wing is your only chance against imperial capital ships, its devastating when a Tantun cruiser kills almost all of them in 10 seconds. Managing ships is hard. With the empire you just send in your gugernauts and they kill everything. With the alliance untill you get the assault frigate expect to see your capital ships blown out of orbit. The nebulon B frigate (medical frigate) is really only good at giving Luke a robot arm and being blown to peices.
Luckily even if you cant hold space, you can hold planet surfaces if you invest in defenses. The battles can be tense though. But just as shields are hard for you, they are for the enemy. Rebel infantry are really good, just watch out for the over powered tie maulers who can just run your entire army over at 60mph.
Still the best starwars RTS I can think of, and there are lots of mods. I think there is even a 40k mod.
