If you bought the steam version and he is also running steam version, then there should be no problem at all. Unless of course your friend is running a mod or something, but I doubt they are. But, there is only 1 lobby system - and there is no such thing as a "Steam lobby". Valve games run servers through steam, yes, but there are not steam lobbies. I would assume his games are coming up red to you, have you both ensured you were playing the same game? If you try to launch FoC by use of a shortcut or the swfoc.exe directly, it will launch EaW instead of FoC, due to the way valve set up the game's files on steam. To play EaW, you click the game in your Steam Client and click "Play Star Wars: Empire at War Gold" and to play FoC click, "Forces of Corruption".
Now, you might try your retail copy if you cannot get steam to work (though, you should be able, there is something minor that you or your friend is doing). But, nonetheless, I will post about this anyway. Somehow the way the game was set up on Steam it is not compatible to play with Retail (and also has a different version string by 2 digits) - but there is a fix. I could explain it here, but since I have explained it elsewhere, I will direct you to it.
Here is the fix, and an explanation as to why you have to use it: http://retakeeaw.freeforums.org/retail-to-steam-connectivity-fix-t5.html?sid=ef7f470a862d1d5836b6536ed1e51926
And, while you are there, you should sign up. It's free and fast, and you should also take a look at this post I made about Retake Empire at War: http://steamcommunity.com/app/32470/discussions/0/828935673213297710/
Our goals are also on the website, I am sure you can find them easy (I believe they are under the Community News Forums).
We would love to have you join our cause, the more the merrier.
I am sorry if this seems rude, but did you even read my post? I told you that there is no distinction between a "Gamespy" lobby and a "Steam" lobby, and even said there is no such thing as a "Steam" lobby. The lobby system is run universal, and that bit of information you gave me gives me no edge in helping with your problem. I need specific details as to what games you are both trying to play on, if there are mods involved, if there is an error code, etc. And btw, renaming the save game location won't do anything, and it will just recreate in the correct directory.
Not sir what to say. no errors. I log into. when I log in, it tells me "welcome to battleground starwars". It also reminds me that Lucas art and gamespy will never ask for my password.
When my fiend and I look at the different lobbies, under custom match, we see different lobbies. Is that normal?
Thanks,
Are you and your friend on different servers?
THERE IS ONLY 1 LOBBY SYSTEM. BOTH STEAM AND RETAIL USE THE SAME LOBBY SYSTEM. Now that I have clafified myself, by servers I mean what location your game is playing at (you can change the location in your network options). If both of you are not playing in the same server location, then that is why. Also, I might be confusing you with the term lobby - I am using the term to describe the entire server system in which you host games. The individual games I call "hosts" or "game hosts" or "Game Lobbies", but the Lobby is the overall server system - not to be mistaken with the servers themselves. All servers share the same lobby system, you can just connect to different locations.
Thanks
