Can I use a console controller with LEGO games?

I recently got back into Lego Star Wars saga and since I only have a PS3 controller it was pretty annoying having to download an unofficial client and bind all my controls for my PS3 controller to work with the game... Is the Xbox 360 controller better for the games, I have never tried it but when I plug it in, will the LEGO game automatically assign the controls in-game for me? I also plan to buy the Lord of the Rings lego game as well so same question for that!

Any Xinput controller should work and will also work with the Steam big picture mode.

Well, the xbox controller is more supported by most games...
And yup, for most games you don't have to configure it, unless you have other preferences than the default setup...

the games set the keys automatically if it detects and xinput device(like an xbox360 controller or the logitech 710)
also the icons match the buttons of the controller
