I don't know if Win8 has the same options,
but in previous OS at least you right-click the program -> properties -> compatability -> Run in 256 colors.

Gettting the same issue running windows 7. Compatibility mode does nothing.

I found a solution. In your steam client right click the game and go to properties > local files > browse local files. Once your there right click on the game launcher and click > properties > compatibility settings and click the reduced color mode. That lets you open the game. Once in though i encounter another problem. I need a cd to play the game!!!!

If you try to go to the compatibility tab from the desktop shortcut it wont work (in addition to my last post)

I found this problem when I changed the settings of the game to "Enable 3D acceleration". After that when I tried to restart the game I got the 256 colors error.

On Windows 8.1 64bits it was fixed by Right Clicking on the game icon, properties and compatible mode set to "256 Colors".

Can't find any "compatibility mode" anywhere.

Nope.

Running it in Compatibility Mode (256 color) with *OR* without the ddraw.dll; still results in a black screen with what appears to be Health and Ammo HUD displays.

I will say that with MotS, when my lightsaber strikes...something the screen does 'flash' so some of the graphics are working :P
