Am I missing anything?
By just buying the SE and not with revenge or the complete pack? A guy at work has been trying to get me to buy this game so I'm just wondering

Well, that depends on which item you put in your cart. Here are the store pages for

1) Secret of Monkey Island: SE

2) Revenge: SE

3) SE Bundle (Secret: SE + Revenge: SE)

I mean am I missing a good aprt of the experience by just buying the SE and nothing else

Ah, sorry, I misunderstood. Well, the entire series consists of 5 titles, so there's always more, but just the first game on its own should be a great experience too. It definitely works as a standalone story.

If you like it, though, I do recommend getting Revenge later as well, and if you can somehow manage, the third game, Curse of Monkey Island too (unfortunately that one's only legally available on CD). These first three are generally considered to be the best of the series and classic adventures.

MI2 is my favourite. If you love the first one, you should love the second one (even though it's slightly different in style). Because it's so story driven, I don't recommend trying the second game until you've finished the first. However, it's worth taking advantage of the sale and getting both.

There's always the risk you won't like either game though. If you own an iOS device there's a free demo on iTunes.

Well, the story of Monkey Island 2 completes that of Monkey Island 1. They were thought by Gilbert to be a single story.
Monkey Island 3, on the other hand, has not been written or developed by Gilbert and the story has only weak connections with the other 2 games, but it's a good game as well. Same thing for the last 2. So, there are 2 "branches" of the Monkey Island series: those created by Gilbert and the others.
All of the 5 games are actually very good games, with some lacking in the 4th game of the series.

To be honest though, the first game is not a cliffhanger or anything. It serves perfectly well as a standalone story.

Whaaaat? The first game is pure classig genius! I played from 1 to 4 (still waiting on 5) and I must say my favourite is the first one and then the second. The third and fourth installment are nice, but not great in my opinion.

yes, the first Monkey Island could be a standalone story, however the stories of the first two are connected.
And, in my opinion, The Curse of Monkey Island is better than Escape. But the first and the second are the best of the series. I can't remember if the first Monkey Island I've ever played was LeChuck's Revenge or The Curse of Monkey Island (I was just a 8 years old kid) but they are very close in my memory.

The first MI game could be a standalone but it sets the pace and story for the second game The revenge of LeChuck, the third installment in the series is the best one however its only in CD form :( . the forth game -The Curse Of Monkey Island - not so great, but every series needs a bad egg and last but not least you have The Tales Of Monkey Island. I really liked them as they played very well an inprovement from the forth game. All in all if The Secret Of Monkey Island is a classic game and you should give it a go, and the special edition has (almost all) the original voice actors which is nice but if you dont like it with the push of the button you are transported back in time to play the original game. Give it a go because you never know you might just like it. ; ^ )

I think I am going to get the Se and lechuck and take it from there. Not too many glowing reviews on the last 3, especially since you can't get the 3rd one except on disk

actually, Jeffacakes, the fourth Monkey Island is "Escape from Monkey Island"... "Curse of Monkey Island" is the third ;)
