If anyone is interest, it's still possible to play the game online with friends. One must start an online game and the other players can use the console to connect to the game. Use ~ to open the console and type "connect" followed by the IP address of the host. You can use https://www.whatismyip.com/ to find your IP address. I hope this will help someone enjoying this game again as I really like it myself and it's a shame it's pretty much dead.
