I recently came back to the game after years of having not played it and was amazed at how fresh it still feels. The original DOD was in my opinion the best thing to come out of the Half-Life modding scene along with Counter-Strike. I used to play it religiously before it's migration to the then beta Steam and continued to play for a while after Steam's official launch.
When the annoucement was made that DOD would be updated to the Source engine I was intially very excited, but after a while of playing it my excitement turned to disappointment, gone were many of the mechanics of the original mod and the game was somewhat simplified...worst of all Valve removed the British from some of the maps and replaced them with the American's, losing some variety in weapon's choices and equipment.
I decided to return to the game having become disillusioned with the general state of multiplayer shooters on PC, looking for something to satisfy my old school sensibilities. After a couple of useless rounds something clicked, I started playing like a demon, the old DOD player in me came alive.
The action is frenetic, run and gunning depending on what class you play (my preference is Assault). Tight map bottlenecks are plentiful, providing some delicious nade and spray gunplay and by and large the community is a good one, with many well established dedicated servers. The only downside of many of these server's is they are of the 24/7 no map cycling variety, but that's not a huge deal-breaker.
If your looking for a satisfyingly fast, fun multiplayer shooter, honed to near perfection....you could do far worse than DOD:Source.
