Although Valve has irreversibly ruined what was once a great game with novel ideas since buying Day of Defeat from the original developers, the game still maintains some level of entertainment. I have no idea how much it costs because I've always owned this game - maybe 10 dollars now? - but it's still worth it. Unfortunately, there aren't any other WW2 first person shooters anymore. I highly doubt anyone plays CoD WaW anymore and Heroes and Generals is...meh. Unless people are still playing Enemy Front.
I don't know about everyone else, but basically my entire time spent playing DoD source is similar to the life of a heroin addict. I spend all my time when I play trying to relive the glorious moments possible in the original DoD, when you could set up an MG and literally slaughter SO MANY people on the other team before you got killed - if you got killed. Unfortunately, source engine has eliminated that ability because of lighting and because of how overly accurate all guns are, but that is my quest.
To go into further detail:
DoD, before Valve bought it, had paratrooper maps. Paratrooper maps were CS like 1-spawn only objective-based rounds, with paratroopers - obviously. So you had excellent maps like hedgerow, and you got FG42s, and the greasegun, as well as the K43 and M1 Carbine. Valve got rid of all of that. They got rid of the British team entirely, and with them the Enfield, Bren, Sten, Webley, and their grenades. In addition, they also got rid of the Bar bipod, and the MG34. This variety is what made the game so awesome from 2000 until it was bought.
One of the most absurdly ridiculous things in the game is that Valve put in RPGs, and they were there for a now non-existent purpose, yet the class and weapons remain in the game. The RPG class is just ridiculous - Allies get M1 Carbine with only 3 mags, Axis gets an automatic C96 with a stock. Both of them very good guns in the game, especially C96. Then they can drop their RPGs and get a primary. Those classes were originally put in the game for objectve maps where you actually had to destroy building parts or other objectives with them . The modern game literally has none of those maps, yet, you can still use the class. And it's completely ridiculous - I say this as someone who likes playing that class - because you can literally run around and rocket people in the face. Snipe people with rockets.
Even if you get the original DoD on Steam, you're not going to find that experience. Maybe you can find some private servers of beta DoD, if you are willing to try to look at 17 year old graphics.
