Nah, I don't think so. WINE wrapper? Nah. The Witcher 3 use DX11 and for now WINE not support yet even DX10 so its not possible now. (Codeweavers in future wants to add dx10/11 support to its own Crossover / WINE but this take some times.)
Also Valve not porting others games and not woking on WINE for this port!
Only hope in native port in OpenGL doing by CD Projekt or any porting studios or wrapped by VP in eON engine.
So, we need wait I think to end of summer.
Then I asked them on Twitter again. This time @witchergame -> no answer
So I sent them an e-mail with question about Linux/SteamOS support -> no answer
Time to give up.
They really got me with the "coming to SteamOS" banner. I was very excited and even began to read The Witcher books but it's over now :(
I really think valve is to blame for that banner. When it went up for pre orders it was taken down shortly there after. I don't think cdpr wants to confirm nor deny the Linux version till they have something more concrete as to if it will be made or not.
All games ported by external companies use the same secrecy model to keep windows and other OS sales isolated.
If it happens it will happen after both expansions are out I would imagine.
The math is not an enemy.
They don't tell you one year before the release that they will release any game.
I agree that any info/teaser is better than no info, but you really can't tell that they not hidding the real game name until weeks/days before the release
I do not think a port by CDPR is very likely, I would expect it to be outsourced to Feral or Aspyr, or it could be an eON wrapper by VP (especially since TW2 was already "ported" the same way).
However, its invalid to argue there is no market for big games on linux. Just one week ago we got Shadows of Mordor, one of the best linux ports of a AAA game i have seen so far. I guess most publishers are pretty "traditional" not ready for experiments, but games like SoM prove the tide is turning, even if horribly slow.
Therefore we will see more linux titles in the future, just dont buy them for windows in advance giving steam the wrong signal ;-)
I also wrote them that if they wish to keep it in secret then I will not share their reply with anynone but they didn't say anything about it so hopefully I'm free to share it. This is amazing! I can't wait to play this awesome game on my Arch Linux.
