Question about discovering hidden stacks aka purple areas

So for some reason while in sneak mode you see them sooner.

The question is whether mechanics, perception or sneaking is used to dertermine if you can see them.

Mechanics. Scouting helps, but the higher your Mechanics skill becomes, the less necessary scouting becomes.

All of the above are factors. Mechanics has the biggest impact but sneaking will help you see it sooner especially if you're on the threshold of having enough mechanics or not to see it
