Do I recommend this game? I would give it a qualified yes. If you are willing to put in the time to learn the game, and enjoy sandbox games, then yes. Looking at the achievements that the community is getting, I would say that unfortunately is very few people.
This video might help with how to do things:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXQijj2-DEw
The current release of the game as of writing this is 3.53 which has been completely stable and bug free. The only issue I have had was the game had an issue with cool'n'quiet in the BIOS, but I am also on Win 10 Tech Preview, which may have contributed.
It is a change of direction from the last several releases in the X series. Mostly for the better, some kind of illogical.
The sense of scale is very nice. Stations and planets feel larger than ever. The highways make things feel very far apart (usually) and eliminate most of the loading screens in the game. SETA (game speed control from previous games) is gone, meaning you can't cross a map in a few seconds, adding to the scale. Between the map scaling out so far, stations combining what was previously several stations, and regions sharing a similar background leads many to underestimate how much is really in this game. That said, an expansion adding a lot more places would be nice for those that enjoy exploring.
The economy/trading side of the game is in a way improved over previous generations of the game, but things here can be illogical. Being able to assign a trade run finally ends the race to the station with npcs. A centralized location to see prices is very nice, but could use some tweaks. If you don't want to mod the game, you need to play minigames to have the stations keep telling you what they are selling. I've never met a company in real life that refused to tell me what they sell and give me a price update for their product without driving up to their loading dock. After a station dropped off my list three times in two minutes due to price changes, I knew I had to mod that 'feature'.
Combat is far more similar to previous games than I expected, despite the one ship limitation. You can still control a fleet of ships, and dock on large ships. Riding around on a capital ship as it travels was quite amusing after extended travel through the highways.
I could write more, but I don't want to right now.
