If wood and ore were used exactly the same, then there wouldn't be any real strategy or choice to make in your upgrading. You'd just upgrade them all in a linear fashion. Since building upgrades use heavy wood, and gear uses heavy ore, you can make decisions based on how you play.
Personally, I focus HEAVILY on wood gathering and I upgrade my lumber mill much more often/faster than my foundry. I generally keep my lumber mill 1 or 2 tiers higher than my foundry.
But some people use a lot of gear, so they upgrade them equally or care more about ore.
Another tip: research and resource gathering happens even if you exit out of the game. So check it often to queue up resources and research.
Triads: 404,490
Food: 1,874 (still gets dumped into population because people)
Population: 6,600
Ore: 2,353 (was in the 2000s when I'd finished the last upgrade)
Wood: 385 (still gathering just to have 25 of every gear for completion sake)
Dunno about you, but I'd say that's a rather lopsided balance, especially since there is no way I am ever going to spend 400,000 triads. And despite your claim earlier of ore being more favored toward gear, I'd have to disagree. Looking over all the pieces of gear, I'd say they play a fairly equal role in it. 4 pieces use only ore, 3 pieces use only lumber, and 5 use equal parts lumber and ore. (Nothing uses 5 lumber and 20 ore, in other words. Notable: Amplifiers use 50 of both mats.)
If nothing else, we need a way to spend triads when we've run out of stuff to spend triads on. Say, maybe upgrades to our tower? Damage amplification, overshield, health bonus, things like that? Maybe they're temporary and have to be repurchased each tower, or they require a certain amount of monetary upkeep to hold on to, or they can be upgraded an unlimited number of times with exponentially rising costs each time? After all, we do so much city building that we completely neglect upgrading the one thing that lets us keep our city the way it is. As to why only triads for those upgrade ideas, the elementalists are the ones running the tower after all, so maybe the extra little somethin' somethin' under the table encourages them to work harder to make the tower better without consuming the already precious ore, lumber, and food.
Instead, we added the quest system (which gives you a way to farm resource via battle), and we also changed all the weapons and bombs in the blacksmith to ORE and Triad cost only.
For many people, wood is very important in the early and mid game when you are doing a lot of building construction. Such players should invest heavily in their lumber mill early.
Other players rely more on gear, and as a result they consume ore more heavily.
For almost everyone, the late game shifts more towards ore. You will still use wood for blockades and/or attack dummies, but ore will become more important as you start to use more gear.
We feel like this is a good balance.
Remember that you can queue up wood to gather even while you're not playing.
We have a change coming that will also help here a bit that I think people will really like. Part of our next major free update.
Have you played much yet with the new update: RESOURCE RAMPAGE?

I think if you play with that - especially if you start a new city - you'll notice a HUGE difference.
Every single time you return to the game you'll have a full load of resources to collect, and in general it is more efficient with less "dead time" that you aren't earning resources.
I need 1000 woods for an upgrade, but my sawmill only stores 90. This means I have to start the game just to click “Collect” 11 times, exit and go do something else and then on the 12th time I’ll finally have my 1000 woods. Not very fun… I don’t know what other players think of it.
