Warheads seem weak
I'm in a game right now and I just unlocked warheads. The thing is, they do only about half the damage per her of my torpedoes, cost more, and actually have less dps. The only thing going for them is they have a slightly wider area of effect. But it's only a 10% increase.

Am I missing something?

I do have them on a 10k scale destroyer hull if that matters.

Warheads are typically placed on a dedicated ship, and are extremely effective at destroying even well-armored warships. They deal damage to every hex on a ship simultaneously, which means that control cores (and more dangerously, antimatter generators) will take significant damage regardless of how much armor the enemy uses.

Warheads cannot be compared directly by DPS stats alone to other weapons. As Dalo said, they do damage in a fundamentally different way than other weapons. By damaging all hexes on a ship, they essentially bypass armor and hit everything important at once. Non-armor hexes usually have considerably lower health than armor hexes. They would be more powerful than they already are if they had the same DPS rating as standard weapons.

In the stock game they also completely ignore shields which means there is no means of protecting critical systems from them. They will pretty much one-shot ships with unprotected (no bulkhead or nanomesh) Antimatter Generators but it's usually just a matter of having a big enough warhead system to quickly take out most comparably sized designs.

DOF has changed warheads so that shields are at least some defense against them. I'm not sure if Rising Stars or any other mod has made similar adjustments or not. In the stock game they are expensive and clunky to use but definitely not weak - particularly if you devote a large portion of your design to just the warhead weapon.
RS has recently made those adjustments I believe not sure if it's only on the github version currently though.

Warheads are a weapon which needs micro to use. Once you have it unlocked your home free to kill ships you otherwise would have no chance against.

All you need is enough damage to kill the Antimatter, Crew control cores or computer control cores to one shot a flagship.
Actually, the Warhead adjustments went live with 1.1.1.
Cool! I ended up going particle lances instead, the other one that pierces ships. It does similar things, and it works even if you're fighting massive fleets (I'm seeing how far out I can go on an expance map).

By massive fleets I mean I'm fighting ones that have ships across the entire system. All about 10 times the size of my ships and about 10 at a time.
