TLDR; Good game (9.5/10), be what you want, do what you want and be able to be the best at what you do, though it takes a herculean effort to do so.
This is my single favorite game in my game library.
I got this game recommended to me by one of my friends and back then I wasn't a fan of simulator games and unfamiliar with space games.
I started this game not knowing what to do, even with some newbie help from my friend.
After that, the manual was (barring a few errors) pretty helpful, but even then doesn't apply to even a quarter of the game.
the game has a steep (massive) learning curve, combined with the vast amount of time you have to spend in game to actually become a sizeable entity makes this the most rewarding game I have ever played.
I haven't bothered much with it's sequel (X-Rebirth) or it's brothers of the same era (X3-Reunion & X3-Albion prelude), but I can tell you this game is worth it, though I can't possibly tell you which is better.
The game isn't without flaws though, for starters the auto pilot or auto 'pilok' as it is often referred to, because it is notorious for crashing your ship into rocks, other ships or sector gates.
While for me this is extremely rare, it does happen.
Also, this game has a GOD.
GOD is actually part of the game engine and calculates which factories do not produce (enough) profit and deletes these, potentially risking important factories of rare weapons to disappear.
While most (if not all) factories can be built yourself, some factories need to be unlocked by getting further into the game, but this problem is certainly not insurmountable.
Right now I don't have any more negative things to comment on this game, the things mentioned above being my biggest ''issues'' with this game.
I say "issues", because they can be easily overcome with some effort on your own part.
I hope you enjoy this game as much as I still do.
9,5/10, best game in my library
