New to X3TC - Questions regarding combat ships in early game.
Hi guys, new to X3TC, and I'm looking to buy my first combat ship so I'm looking for suggestions.

I'm three days into the Trader plot and my Mercury freighter is almost fully upgraded with the exception of the Jump Drive and Trader Command Software Mk 3. My plan was to automate my Mercury while I explore and take combat missions in a fighter.

A lot of people recommend the Nova so that is my goal but I obviously don't have the credits for it at the moment as I've most likely wasted a large chunk of credits on upgrading my Mercury's cargo hold.

I did come across someone selling a used Buster Raider and I managed to fix it back up. Payed 118,000 credits for the ship and it has a resale value of 350,000 credits. Now, I'm almost tempted to use this as my combat ship but the ship has no equipment and the money gained from selling it would go a long way towards a Jump Drive and Trader Command Software Mk 3.

Another idea is to buy a M5 scout ship. I've read they're pretty horrible in combat unless you really know how to fly but they're cheap and I can get the required credits in a single trade run. Combat aside, I could always use it to scout station prices, pick up abandoned cargo in areas prone to conflict, or explore. I've made quite a bit of cash by doing that in Ore Belt with my Mercury during the pirate raids.

So, any suggestions? Maybe there's something I missed?

Get a Discovery M5. I just used the one given at start of humble merchant. Use it to explore more of the galaxy, do asteroid scan missions (with mineral scanner), freight scan missions (with freight scanner) in pirate sectors for pirates, and maybe easier individual transport missions (with cargo lifesupport system and docking computer). You'll make plenty of profitttsss that way. You can also equip the freighter with best buy/best sell software and manually trade it back and forth. Somethikng I did a ton of early game was find cheap ore (50) and sell it to nearby places that need ore (usually 190+). Doing that over and over gets you some nice money and other than occasionally having to buy/sell ore and send to specific station once it reaches specific sector the freighter is on its own.

I'll give that a try. Most of my time has been spent in Ore Belt running Energy Cells and Ore with the occasional Meatsteak. I do have the buy/sell software but the Ore Belt stations have been pretty predictable so far.

How crucial is a Jump Drive early into the game? I do most of my trading in safe areas and if I can hold off on buying one for a while then I might get the Trader Command software and automate my freighter while I run around in an M5.

As for the Discovery.. The first thing I did was sell mine the moment I got to Argon Prime but I don't think buying another will be a problem ( probably after getting the Trader Command software ). Also, how useful are satellites? I've read that you can drop them in a system to monitor station prices and goods. How much micromanagement do these things need?

HI,

I totally forgot about Satelites. They are a must have. Make sure you purchase "Advanced Sats" and position them where you can get full coverage or near full coverage of all the stations in a sector (some large sectors may require multiple sats). In relatively secure/occupied space they should not get destroyed and and drop and forget items (no upkeep or anything needed). Once you have the satelite up, you can easily check best buy/sell prices without having to a ship in sector. It makes it easy to decide where to send your manual trade ships or go yourself.

Another note... when your ore trade run is depleted in Ore Belt (Ore is no longer 50 or low priced)... move your trader left and south to Paranid space. The sector there is Empire Eines and is another Ore sector. You can purchase ore there and sell it to factories in Paranid Prime (one jump east) or other nearby sectors. One jump south of Paranid Prime is Empire's Edge. Empires Edge is where you want to set your first MK3 Trader and have it sector trade.

Paranid Prime is also where you should purchase docking computers which makes docking at stations for less of a hassle and it takes far less time. Just get a certain distance from the station, auto dock and you are there. No waititng for the ship to fly to the docking lights and dock into the station.

I would get a jump drive for the sector trader and make sure you set it up to allow jumping and make sure it has energy cells. That way if it is attacked (make sure you do max out its shields) it will jump to safety, you will be notified if you have a ship under attack. The jump drive is more useful for universal traders (which you set your sector traders to once they reach a higher skill level) since they fly all over the universe and occasionally fly into dangerous space.

Also be on the lookout for more cheap ships being sold. I got my first 3 or 4 trade ships (not counting the initial one) buy purchasing cheap freighters and manually repairing them (can take some time, but worth it when you are poor). Also, you can easily repair ships and sell them for more (which I did with most of the fighters I purchased early on).

Happy hunting and let me know if there is anything else you need help with.

I think luck is finally on my side..

Docked at Argon Prime Shipyard to sell that Buster Raider that I had bought and found someone at the station selling a Discovery Vanguard for only 8,000 credits. Not only did I make 350k off the Buster but I saved about 80k on the Discovery. :)

I'm going to give the satellites a try, thanks for the help.

I managed to find a Split Scorpion Raider for 45k. It doesn't have any equipment so I'm shopping. What kind of setup would you recommend for one? It's an M4 with 6 weapon bays and ~2400 weapon power.

You may already be well past this, but PACs and HEPTs are like literally the only viable options for the M4 Scorpion as a combat interceptor. The ship is fast, but lightly shielded, so you'll likely want to be flying evasive more than trying to bring guns to bear... that said, the HEPTs are probably viable, but bear in mind that with a full loadout of HEPTs you'll exhaust your weapon energy in about 2 seconds of sustained fire.

Since the HEPT is basically the advantage a Scorpion has over other M4s, I'd probably mount it and use hit and run tactics.

Yup, I've already moved on to a Nova Raider and loaded it up with HEPTs and PRGs. It gives me a little flexibility when it comes to capping or destroying a ship. I do miss the speed though, 190ms feels to slow in most engagements, especially against fast movers. I also have an Advanced Eclipse but that thing is even slower.

I've had the unfortunate experience of going up against a Pirate Mamba Raider loaded with several PBGs. I'm thinking I need to get better missiles for faster ships, or at least a missile type that packs more punch without sacraficing too much speed.

<3 PBGs, Those things are so obscenely powerful.

M5s and M4s become a pain in the ♥♥♥ as you start to get bigger ships. It's basically what inspired me to assemble a fleet as my next big step forward; a couple Centaurs with PBGs, a Cerberus loaded with M4s and M3s and flak batteries for fighter defense, and then most recently my Titan which I have yet to arm.

It's been a few weeks since I've played, though, I'm mad at the Argon military right now. I'll be getting back to it soon, following you guys on the forums and vicariously getting my fix until then. ;)
