Do you cheat or mods to get goodies faster?
I feel like this game has alot to offer, but you can't get to any of it because you don't have any money. Besides the complexity, I feel like alot of people would just give up.

I started as a figthter and then restarted as a humble merchant to follow the guides to actually get some money. I finally got some merchant grades and am sitting at around 100k.

I'm really tempted to start cheating.

I really think the game would be much better if they started you with a better ship, whatever your starting point.

Nope. Bigger sense of accomplishment and more immersion from playing it legitimately. There are plenty of quick and easy ways to make credits in-game anyway. I personally like to run taxi missions with a fast TP with a jump drive installed, you can sometimes make upwards of 7~ million credits in under 5 minutes.

Following guides is a great way to start, but you also need to THINK. I'm sure I'm not alone in enjoying that aspect of it, and it isn't at all the game nor the developer's fault if a lot of people are impatient and give up.

It's nice to achieve things legit and the start should be kind of hard, shouldn't it? The first billion is always the hardest ;)
But there is also nothing wrong with scripting/modding to get the game exactly the way you like it - that's why it comes with a script editor, welcomes modders etc.
I played all X titles, the bulk of them way before Steam and when TC came out I only played with self-made scripts because I didn't want to start from scratch for the 5th time... But believe me, once you are really into the game, you will take this pill and start all over just because of the challenge! And everything will be fine :)

Unmodded and have huge complexes and many ships along with piles of cash.

haha, I just wish there was a origin with a firefly level ship. But back to the grind it is. Maybe I'll find a sweet spot for money soon.

Reminds me of Dark Souls sometimes, hopefully the pay off is as nice. Very pretty in both games atleast.

I'm playing vanilla without cheats (the only add-on I have it's the bonus pack). As far as I know scripts and cheats disable achievements and I'm trying to get the "Filthy Rich" one :)

The filthy rich one isn't too hard to get... the HUB plot is super time consuming... and I'm no where near the ones where you get max rep in trade and max rep in fighting... those will take a while also. I'm not even going to attempt dead is dead ones...

I run my games with or without cheats depending on my mood. Though I do enjoy trying my hardest not cheating.

When your game gets ***modified*** (stated at the bottom of the pilot status) achievements are disabled. And you don't have to "cheat" to get the ***modified*** - just activating the script editor or installing mods (depends on the particular mod) is already sufficient :)

Regarding the "Filthy Rich" achievement I'm with clthomps as there are many legit ways to earn money really fast...

It is a long game and the start tries and succeeds at being a bit of a grind. With a scout and transport ship at the start you can begin scouting the galaxy and setting up your sattelite network while you trade in energy cells and ore (safe bets) to start building some money.

If you want to avoid the grind as quickly as possible save for TCS MkIII and a jumpdrive so you can set your transport to begin sector and eventually universe trading. A couple universe traders and a couple mining ships set to auto mine and sell will start the credits rolling in and you can either fly around scouting or buy a M4 and start taking potshots at lonely pirates.

Good times!

Go for capturing ships loaaaads 'o' money to made that ways

Max engines in a fast scout (M5) class ship... get a freight scanner... and do pirate scan missions. Get multiple going at once if you can, they you get credit for each ship multiple times. You can make huge amounts of money for simple racing around a system scanning everything that comes in.

I have never use cheats in any of the X franchise titles. Takes away from the accomplishment.
clthomps Dec 6, 2013 @ 6:45pm
Agreed... no need to modify your game.
