Build an empire, amass a fleet, or just get yourself a small ship and explore and map out the universe. You can do most anything you want.
It's the potential of the progress you can make from being small time to being the big wig in town that attracts people.
Check starting guides for getting money at start. Do missions, find abandoned ships and sell them, kill pirates and loot them - information about that should be found easily.
For money: Get a merchant ship (TS) as soon as possible, get enough money for MK3 trading software, install it and set it to auto-trade. Early money problems gone. Use time compression and just wait for the money. Build up more auto-traders and/or stations and let TS ships do the money making stuff for you.
For fights: If you find fighting too hard - get a bigger ship and fit it right. Get a whole fleet to cover you. Set it on guard sectors, let it guard you - missions are easy if you outgun/outnumber enemies.
Build specialized fleets to cover special situations (fighter hunting, capital ship fighting and so on).
Game is about building up huge stuff, as mentioned above. It is quite easy to do so, but will take some time. Get stats on stations, ships and trade goods. If you don't like stats reading, that game may be not for you.
Game shines *really, really* bright, when you are able send out your main fleet to a heavy Xenon sector - like some M2, covered by several M7s and M6s, guarded by fully loaded M8/M7M missile bombers.....
Jump in the fast TM transporters or even M1 carriers with whole wings to fight that M4/5/6 fighter stuff.
Learn how to watch ships from external view, enjoy the big fight and watch your self made SciFi battle movie...
Well, that's how i play X games and how i make the most fun out of it and how they should be...
BTW: All above is what X Rebirth IS NOT, AND WILL NOT....
It has flashier graphics, and less of everything else when compared to X3. A lot less.
P.S. If you are crashing alot with SETI on, then your CPU isn't fast enough and you need to lower the SETI or graphics settings until it stops crashing so much. If your M5 goes over 500 m/s, then a slower ship won't crash so much either.
