Boost extention and restricted areas?

what exactly does boost extention do? the game controls say press TAB but nothing happens.

Why can i not get to Earth? I cant get past Venus or i will get shot even though im playing terran defender, or maybe it has something to do with progressing the story?

one more question, where can i find a jumpdrive?

Hit tab with the boost extension is the same as holding speed up to the top, although it's just one key press so its easier. So it's just quickly set your speed to maximum.

You need to progress Terran plot to earn access to other sectors, including Earth.

As well as setting your desired speed to maximum, the Boost Extension increases your acceleration by 3 times (while holding down TAB) so that you reach that top speed much quicker. This is obviously more noticable if you are flying a ship with low acceleration like a transport or a capitol ship.

So you can jump only to sectors with gates. Terran sectors, apart from Asteroid Belt, don't have jump-gates. They use Trans-Orbital Accelerators which are incompatible with a jumpdrive.
