IIRC, Egosoft licenced the rights to port the X series to Linux and Mac to different developers. They are small developers, remember and didn't have the resources to do this in house at the time. They either bought the Linux rights back, or the guy who had them is more willing to work with Egosoft to get the games on Steam. Also, apparently the version of X3 on the Apple app store is (or was) pretty much unplayable on OSX Lion

EDIT: Did some research and Linux Game Publishing (LGP) had licenced and ported X2 and X3 to Linux. Their licence expired in 2012. The Mac licensee for X3 is Virtual Publishing. presumably their licence hasn't expired yet. Or Egosoft want to get one port up and running properly before working on another

I have no idea if the present Linux version of X3 is based LGP's work or is a new port

I notice these are in the app store for half the price - is there a difference between the version in steam and the app store?

The version on the App Store is from Virtual Programming, the company who licenced the rights to port it to the Mac. It is possible they will end support for their port of the X3 games, now that there is a version available directly from Egosoft. After all, you can no longer buy the Linux ports of the various X3 games from Linux Game Publishing, who licenced the rights to port the X series to Linux.

But you might want to buy it anyway, to support a small developer who has brought a lot of good strategy games to the Mac.

Thank you mad_andy - at least I presume both games are the same. The cheaper options beckon....

This new version of X3: Reunion is the new native beta for OS X. You should get it. Egosoft is a really great company.

Doesn't seem to be a good idea to get the Virtual Programming MAS version of the game: Egosoft pulled the plugs[forum.egosoft.com] on the old 3rd party ports of their games, so any version you get anywhere else but here on Steam is no longer supported and won't get any updates. Proof in point: the MAS version of Albion Prelude is stuck at patch version 2.5.1, the Steam version is version 3.0.

The *old* version of X3 was a native finished version. And Virtual Programming is also a great company, that unlike Egosoft has actual experience with porting games to the Mac.
