Is there a way to go into 3rd Person?

There is. Check your Controls. It is usually F2.

Press F1 for 3 seconds to return to your cockpit. F3 and F4 Controls your target screens(if activated).

FYI, use the numpad 1-9 to move the camera around your ship. Numpad 5 centers the camera again. Numpad 0 changes cinematic modes.
