"Elite has killed the X series" - your opinions please ?
Hi,

Many at my place of work have switched to Elite from X. They say X is all but dead because of Elite.

I rem many years ago when the original X was supposed to be the Elite-killer; it wasn't.

Has this game died a death on the blade of the mighty Elite ?

Your thoughts on this matter are most welcome.

Thanks in advance.

I would ask this in the X Rebirth forum, that is the most frequented X forum on Steam currently.

Elite is more popular, dunno why though Frontier are absolutely hopeless when it comes to developing engaging gameplay. I've X is unintuitive and hard to get into and Elite is too to a certain extent, but Elite is just vapid once the steep learning curve is conquered.

Those are two games aimed at different players...
- if you like more engaging space combat, the "lone wolf" gameplay style, a slightly more realistic feel, you go for Elite
- If you like Empire building, being the CEO of a fleet and corporation, more engaging economy simulation, you go for the X series

X3 has more depth in its non existent tutorial than ED has in it at all.

Unfortunately the kids today don't want depth and challenge, they want flashy flashy pew pew.

I'm hoping X4 can reignite the serious space sim genre because ED is a good try but Fdev just don't seem to understand how to create engaging gameplay. I bought Planet Coaster because everyone said its a great sim and it turned out to be queue scenery simulator 2016, any game where panting trees and bushes is more important than the ride and store positions has some serious design issues.

I've played both the X series and Elite and really, X is a lot superior. Even Rebirth, which is a stripped down X game is way more than elite has.

It just depends on the player you are. Do you want a single ship to fly around as a fighter, or do you want to run an empire consisting of your own factories and production facilities?

No X Rebirth may have killed the x series but i hope not

i got 25 hours of gameplay on Elite, 1000x on x-series. Wonders what I think ;-)

No both X3 and Elite have stuff the other doesn't. In particularly a lot of the Elite players were never going to be playing much X3.

Also the figures for X3 are greatly underestimated in the steam stats. Egosoft provides a NoSteam executable which is the recommended way to play with certain mods like the extremely popular Litcube. I don't know how many users are not appearing in the steam stats, just that they include me.

I bought X3 Reunion only to spend 8 hours and recognize that Reunion is crappy as hell with no mission tracking (really, why ?) bad unlogical trade interface (Freelancer have a much better one)and my f*cking ship don't repair at the shipstation, i dunno how to buy repair, i'm klicking and klicking, nothing happens, wtf and i cannot land on planets. I can land on planets in old Freelancer, it makes only the feeling but feeling is very important. That is why i'm maybe going to drop this game. Or not. I don't know. I kinda like this game, but i don't like that developers made such little things as trade, repair etc so unnecessary difficult to understand.

And yes, i have searched 5 minutes to reverse controls, why them don't let me choose before i start the game, i tried to play with inverted , but i don't have control stick, i only have a mouse. It is different feeling.

I agree that X3 Reunion isn't newb friendly and that that UI is a horror if you aren't used to it, but the game isn't as bad as it currently seems to you. I can't really compare it to freelancer, as i have never played that game.

Anyways, trading is easy once you understand it. Full bar for products means low prices, empty bar means high prices. Vice versa, an empty bar for ressources means the station is paying alot, a full bar means it's going to pay little for ressources. Therefore buy a product on a station when the storage is full and sell it to stations with empty ressources. Trading stations buy and sell for fixed prices.

Later you can buy extensions that show you the prices for wares without docking at them, which makes trading a lot easier. A good start would be buying energy cells in the wall and ore belt and sell it to the energy hungry factories the nearby sectors.

Repairing needs lots of money. I assume you're simply out of money to do so. The price shown is for one percent of damage. You have to use the arrow keys to chose the amount of hull repaired.

Feel free to ask me anything if you need help. The game is really joyful after you get over the initial frustration.

Once you learn your way you'll find a great game here, persevere! :) Best space game I've ever played.

Much better than Elite.

Arguably the best space game ever made

And there is still one thing that I really don't understand. Why the hell I do not have complete sector map ? Loud the story, i've been long enough in space to download all maps in my computer (as example) or is there no real time navi in the future (it is weird, we can even track aircraft online in real time now) ? I was searching for a gate in sector for about 15 minutes, with open wiki web page . Map is weird. I turn left and map shows me turning right. I turn right, map shows me turning left.

Arguably best space game ? Maybe. There is a lot of content, i like it. Freelancer and Elite stay on same level with X3 Reunion in my opinion. Freelancer is space arcade with good story but less content, have nicer maps that Reunion and more action. When i'm flying in Reunion, i turn autopilot on and go make me a tee or breakfeast....Elite - nuff said. Something in the middle for me xD.

Probably because you were upside down. Space is 3D.

You can always visit pirates or Xenon if you want action.
