do saves from the base game work with the director's cut?
I can get the DC for $5 but since I already started the game, I probably won't if it doesn't.

Short answer: no.

Long answer: the Director's Cut is an independent build. If you purchase it, it will sit in your library alongside the base game. You will have to start a fresh new game with the Director's Cut. The reason for that is because the Director's Cut integrates some of the DLCs that were separate from the base game differently, especially The Missing Link, which is now fully part of the Director's Cut. $5 is fairly inexpensive if you want to experience TML as part of the game (and haven't already downloaded it as a separate mini-game), as well as other content, such as a commentary track, documentary, and the "New Game+" feature that allows you to start a new game with all of the augmentations you earned in a previous play-through. One other thing, the boss battles have been adjusted to give you more options.

That said, there are some bugs/issues with the Director's Cut, that a number of people have experienced. While I have not had the same problems as them (it plays fairly smoothly on my system), I have noticed some texture glitches here and there. Also, it has a slightly different "look" than the first incarnation, as the yellow sheen/filter has been toned down; some dislike the new look, but I prefer it since I thought everything looked a little too jaundiced.

I hope this allows you to make an informed decision.

Well, you didn't have to answer it. Kind of a rude answer.
