The autopilot is quite usefull if you ask him to dock a station
When you arrive in front of the doors of the station thanks to the command U (autopilot) once the doors open, press the Esc key.

Also, as the post above me mentions, you can press the ESC key to avoid flying manually to a ship platform, but you might miss out on the X2 "freebies", also known as hidden cargo containers(you just have to look around to find them, they're really small. Some stations don't have them).
