Playing X2 again, not played it sinbce 2005. Amazed how good it is...
I haven't played X2 since I bought my first game in the X series, which was X2 The Threat.
It's rather stunning... it has so much more "spirit" than the X3 games, which hardly have a story worth mentioning.

Although, I have so far, only played about 4 hours in the X2 game, it has so much that the X3 games lack: story, spirit ...

The X2 games have an actuall story, and some story cinematics to present the story, which is exactly what I like in a game. It reminds me of some of the best space games ever made: Wing Commander III & IV and Freelancer.

I haven't played X2 since 2005, but I'm looking forward to enjoy it again, atleast for a while... (while I wait for the release of X Rebirth)

I found out that there's actually nothing else but grinding pirate ships for cash. No idea why I liked it so much in the past.

Personally, I've always built up a trading empire with lots of fabs and a few universal traders ...
I only capture a rather small amount of ships in my games ...

It's either capping ships or being afk with SETA on, waiting to accumulate cash for another station, cause you do need some money to start with. The game itself is interesting at the very beginning with nothing but naked disco and close to the actual end with lots of stuff to do something serious.

Waiting afk with SETA is lameish for me. There is so much to do in the waiting, grinding the pirate/Xenon ships for example, discovering new sectors, doing calculations about a great spot for your next station or comparing ships to know which one will be perfect to you or doing station missions. In X3s you can also fly around and enjoy the beautiful universe with awesome music (not saying it's not in X2).

But wait, no story in X3s? When I played X3 Reunion, I was going through a story, with cutscenes and all that stuff, same like in X2. Just a little bit less atmospheric, but the flying inside stations and asteroids was a nice idea! And I guess that there also must be a story in X3 Terran Conflict and Albion Prelude, or even more of them, like I've read. However, in X3s you have even more possibilities, so players usually just prefer to play storyless gamestarts, like pirate or Terran defender... Damn can't wait for a new PC on which I'll play them :)

You do the best if you go to the Egosoft website and look for the forums, there are guides for every X game in the stickies I think. If not then just search X2 Ultimate guide in Google and click the Egosoft forum link, it's gonna help you a lot

It's a space combat and economy simulator. Yeah it's pretty much boring to people who are used only to arcade games with great effects and sounds. X2 has many possibilities and there's always something to do. Just read the forums for guides because it looks like you don't know how it's played

1. Anyone know where the save files for the Steam version of X2 The Threat live?

2. Also, how to identify good early game trade routes?

1. Disc/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/X2 - The Threat; it are those SAV files looking like X00, X01 etc.

2. You get up way faster by fighting enemies and selling their ships. But if you want to trade, remember to put nav satellites to track some mining stations. Silicon makes by far the most profit I remember, if you can catch it at a low price. But you make the most profit if you get sector traders (requires Bonuspack), the usually around 1 million cr investnemt into one ship gets back really fast, and it makes enormous profits when you have several universe traders with a jumpdrive
