Is it that bad?
So what makes this game get such nasty reviews? Ive been looking at this game for a while but all the "this game sucks" comments kept me away, but not many details on why it sucks...

Any input? thx.

It's not a horrible game, just not the best of its type. Dead Nation on PSN is the best one from this genre, zombie themed anyway. It's just that it's nothing great. I honestly wouldn't spend $9.99 on it, but for it's current sale price of $2.49, I'd say go for it, if you're into dual joystick shooters.

It's biggest failing is that is excessively tough to play. The character moves slowly going forward, and slower going backwards.

There's no way to outrun any of the zombies moving away from them and shooting, so you're forced to runaway without taking any shots, and even then you barely move faster than the re-animated corpses.

So if you're low on health, and have a half dozen zombies chasing you, then it's almost certain you're bound to die. Having the main character move 10-15% faster would change the entire game.

Add to it the limited health, limited pickups, and excessive cost of guns, upgrades & ammo, the game is very hard to play.

Heck, I've got all the weapon upgrades possible, and even I die on some of the early levels, and I don't play the game as a run 'n' gun. I sneak around picking off lone zombie as often as I can.

For $2.50, I'd probably buy it again, for $10 I wouldn't.

I wonder if co-op makes the game easier or if twice as many zombies get thrown at you?!

I'm trying to play the game all the way through, and one of the things that i've noticed (as a nerd and hobby programmer myself) is that the game isn't really bad, just sloppy in many ways.

As slade mentioned if the character moved a little faster it would make it easier. Another thing I noticed is that if the guns either have high penetration ammo that would hit more than one zombie, or if it had some level of knockback to slow them down, it would make the large swarms (and bosses) a lot easier to handle.

Another thing that is really bad is random lag/fps chops. These aren't really bad in the later levels where the maps are smaller, but especially in the second level it's really bad. I think it's how the game calculates the score for each hit. The map is pretty big, there are a lot of zombies, and the way it increments the score for each shot hitting each zombie tends to carry a lot of overhead causing inputs to not detect right (e.g the character stops shooting/moving) and the zombies then jump all over you.

Now one thing that I don't know if anyone knows is if you need breather (for reloading or escape) you can do a dive/roll in whatever direction you are moving in. It helps with the loads-of-bad-guys-in-your-face-killing-you-and-the-stupid-game-won't-let-you-move-fast-enough-to-get-away problem a little bit.

As for co-op (if anybody ever does play it) it does make lot's more zombies appear and i think they are a little tougher, but it's at the same time easier because one can run while the other shoots a clip than you trade out.

However the game does constrict movement on co-op so you have to stay together. Which can make the make the bosses a real pain.

So like what has been said before, it's entirely bad just the best, and kinda sloppy behind the scenes.

So the game started to tick me off in the Airport level. The area's are rather small, cluttered and far too many mutants come at you with little break in between and I didn't get much in the way of health drops.

All that meant I broke out Cheat Engine and made my own trainer for the game. I gave myself a bucket load of money and infinite health. I won't post the cheat table here, but if anyone wants help on how to make it feel free to ask. It took me less than 10 minutes to get the cheats up and running.

If this information is against forum rules, I'm happy to remove it.

Dead Nation Defiantly Best Zombie Shooter Game I've Played.

I would love to see Dead Nation on other platforms.

Hi ! Yes, it's not a bad game, but in addition with what's up there, I could regret that You can't zoom in or out, or change the balance of the view. It's old school all right.

What's really boring is that it saved checkpoint where you respawn if you die, but if you leave the game before the end of the chapter, you're back to the start loosing the previous progress.

SO, this game could be fun with a good trainer or a save option....

I just got this in a bundle http:// for about 5€ along with some other indie titles. I guess it is worth checking out for that price.
Apart from that: The game seems to be relatively poorly made. It runs alright on my machine (x2 5200+, 4 gb ram, gf 460 gtx) on high settings but it has some hiccups and graphical glitches. The environment looks quite dead (pun intended - but really it isn't all that interesting). Animation quality is fairly poor and the sound effects are quite shoddy. So is the soundtrack. Physics are quite poor as well. If you can overlook that you still may have fun with it because after all the gameplay is the most defining factor of a game.

From a gameplay perspective the game is just very very average and already I am feeling the boredom creeping up on me (after about maybe 1 hour / 2 levels). You still may get some entertainment out of it but don't expect this to be a title you will want to replay. I guess I am going to return to this and play 1 chapter and another time the next one until I reach the end.

About the running away: You can dodge people, just hold down your spacebar.

I have the game from the bundlestars link above and I was just about to say the same thing.

Use the spacebar to do a very quick forward roll to escape the horde whether you are going forwards or backwards. It's not a good idea to answer questions like this without enough knowledge to answer with any certainty. I hope OP reads this far down. I like the game!

Got it from bundle and it really is horrible. Bad graphics, bad animations, boring system. Bit choppy due to bad optimalization. It could be average 8 years ago, now its plain bad.

you can do that roll only all so often, and for an evasive maneuvre which in all the oher games, makes you invincible for the time you roll, if a zombie gets you, you're still get hurt.
and if you miss one of the waves on the side routes and run there while escaping another group you cant dodgeroll out of danger.

Its just a worse copy of Dead nation (heck, even the logo looks almost the same)
I bought it yesterday for 2,24€ and my personal opinion for it isnt that bad as most of all write.

It is not the big thing but its funny to play in coop and singleplayer and my best pro for this game: it is hard as hell but this is good.

It is worth the money if you have a cooppartner and like difficult games.

To at least me, I love zombie games. I craved the L4D series, The Walking Dead game and show, the Dead Island game and are looking for the sequel even knowing they could have been better, and even the mods or secondary games like Zombie Panic. Those are all first person shooters, not even mentioning Zombie Driver and tons of other games of the sort.

...yet I found this game exceedingly boring and overly cheap from even the start. I am not sure but I think you never run out of ammo but I could be wrong. Also, I am so tired of walking by a bush and being bumrushed by four zombies that walk almost faster than I do. Just all in all, this game is very boring.

Also, if it is a Zombie situation outside, I sure in hell wouldn't go outside in the dark and I certainly wouldn't start the game with that...but yet I never seen light yet...just bad ideas and programming to leech off the Walking Dead idea.

I tried playing co-op, but unlike other co-op games, you have to stick together thus you are restricted in your movement. I'm glad I didn't pay much for the game.
