I remember one reason I stopped playing this game now.
Dying can result in you becoming so weak it's impossible to do ♥♥♥♥.

Yuppers.

Now all my ♥♥♥♥'s broken because when I started the game I was put against too-powerful ships. And no matter what happened, I got my ass handed to me. Because I destroyed nothing, I got no loot, and without loot, I had no money, and without money, all my ♥♥♥♥ broke and I could not fix it.

Genius game.

Genius.

Can't say that I have been in this situation, given that once my ships die, they stay dead (and when my components break, there is no fixing them)

But what you can definitely can do, if you want to keep playing that ship, as opposed to starting a new one, is to abandon the sector, and create a new one, with monsters at a much lower level than your ship. Make some cash, equip your ship again, and then create another sector, at an appropriate level.

If you are dying too much, you may want to make sure that your ship can outrun most enemies. Normal speed can go up to 200, and goes even higher if you use consumable thrust boosts (available at all planets), or the active component called a thruster boost (Hive ships start with one)

Speed is your best defense... this said my last Hardcore ship died (at sector level 116, I think) because I broke my own rules, and was puttering about at speeds lower than 200.

I discovered something else. I had an alliance with the most powerful group in the game, and then all of a sudden, they made an alliance with a faction that hated me. Then, magically, in spite of the fact they would give me money "for being such a great ally," they would attack my ship whenever I wanted to get repairs.

Then they told me I should make peace with the other people they were allied with. Which I did. Spent every last coin I had sealing the deal. Only, that did not stop my so-called ally attacking my ship on sight!

It pissed me off so much I ended up going after their ally that they were "fighting for." You know, the one that made me pay a huge ransom for peace. Of course, that pissed off my original ally a bit - although they apparently loved my trade, so eventually they came back around for me. But still, that should not have happened imho.

If my ally is allied with someone who hates me, then they should be forced to choose to still call themselves my ally or to tell the people who hate me to ♥♥♥♥ off. Not call me their ally while they're attacking me on sight because their other ally is asking them to attack me!

If an ally was shooting at you, it was a bug.

I have never seen, in two years of playing, a whole Empire attack without being at war. But I have seen specific ships getting confused. This is how it happens:

You are at war with race A, and are attacking a planet of theirs. One or more of the planet's defenders are coming after you to save the planet. The colony is destroyed, and before you finish off the defenders, race B colonizes the planet. The defenders switch their allegiance to race B, but keep firing at you. You cannot even fire back.

If you save and restore, everything gets back to normal. I
I also randomly had some Dryads fire missiles at me, even though I hd n alliance with them, but everything else was fine, no recolonizing, no changes in galactic relations...
Just saying there might be a bug around here.

There are at least three that I am aware of:

o When a planet is recolonized.

o One that happens when you are taking down a 'natural' occurrence (locusts, comet, etc...) together with race ships.

o One which happens when you are attacking a device that is threatening a race that is an enemy of another race.

In every case, the best workaround that I have found is to finish what you are doing (kill the locusts, blow up the listening post, etc...) save, quit and reload.
If you get your ship toasted and you can't fix it, just abandon that sector, and start over on a much lower sector. If you got space in your shared storage, you can even start a new ship, play it until you get some parts and money, stash an engine and weapon, go back to your favorite broken ship, start it out on level 1 sector, hit the shared stash for the engine and weapon, and limp over to a friendly world. Repair, swap parts around, repair, have fun being a god of death on level 1, and then go up to a more interesting level.

I've had ally species go to war with me because they allied with another species I was at war with. No loyalty with any of them, so just kill the ones that aren't useful and enjoy the game.
I can also recommend trying different races as their playing styles can vary greatly. And you need to know how the game works before you can figure out which playing style fits you, but for that you need to start playing with a race, and you might end up with one you can't handle.

I started my first game as a Dryad and my performance was rather mediocre and I died many times, though I have to admit I was drowning in money, so that was never a problem. I was suffering from a lack of energy and found my additional abilities rather worthless. Most excrutiating and frustrating was definitely being killraped by a level 16 wild/monster/non-faction hezog destroyer. I was level 21.

Some time later, after reaching level 25 or something close with the dryad I started another game with a Telepath ship, and have been getting along with it MUCH better than before, up to the point where even with a low level ship I could immediately crush the very first human colony in a sector (humans are always annoying trouble, like in real life and stuff), even though it was defended by 2 battlecruisers.
i read this as "boo hoo i suck and play like an idiot"
lol yea i read it as that too. dryad's are awesome.
Never was complaining or said that Dryad's are bad or anything. Just pointing out that some people play better as one race, and some better as another.
Am I right in assuming you're talking about my post when saying "boo hoo i suck and play like an idiot" or did you mean OP?

Thought so, just wanted to be sure I wasn't misunderstood or stuff. Looks like the OP gave up anyway.

the absolute saddest part is even if you fully sucked you could keep putting the game like 4 levels lower than you (or 10 for that matter) and pretend you were a god. kids these days.
Yup.
The replies and the sudden silence kinda smell like: "Oh darn, I suck and I could easily just go back a few steps, but instead of admitting I'm failing and flaming around for no reason I'll just leave my eternal wrath here and go suck at another game."
