Freespace 2

Freespace 2

Game not launching
Once i click play, i am prompted to configure my settings in the launcher. That then leads to another prompt that says "Freespace 2/Fred2 cannot be run from a drive root directory". Any reasonable help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

I am running this on a relatively new Alienware M18xR2 (laptop) with 32 gig of ram and 64 bit windows. The resolution my screen is running at is 1920 x 1080 at 60Hz. I installed all of the new relevant drivers this morning.

I have also tried running the game independantly of steam to achieve the same result as above. Along with that i have tried compatibility mode (XP, ME, 2000, 98, Vista, Server) and low res (640 x 480).

BTW, it is 64 bit windows 7 (I accidently just put 64 bit windows in my initial post)

From the store page:

Addressing install issues
Some users report an error when trying to launch the game.

We are working on a fix, but you may be able to resolve the issue right now by following these steps:

1. Open the folder where Freespace 2 is installed (usually "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Freespace 2\data")

2. Open the "Registry" folder. If there is no Registry folder open the "Data" folder

3. Double-click the file "FS2.reg"

4. Click the "Yes" button to make a system change

5. Click the "Yes" button to confirm

6. Click the "OK" button when Reg Edit says it's done

7. Launch Freespace 2 from your Steam library

Depending on your system settings, you may need to temporarily lower your UAC (User Access Control) settings or disable your anti-virus to make the change. Then re-enable UAC and/or your anti-virus software. We apologize for any inconvenience.
