To run this game properly...
1. Download and install NGlide. (This game requires the good old power of the Voodoo series of drivers and NGlide will do this for you. You can run the game without it, but it's sluggish as hell.)

2. Launch the game and the config screen will popup. Detect video and select 3dfx glide.

3. Click OK and run the game.

Should you want widescreen in older games such as Freespace, you will need to goto your start menu, (or wherever you can access NGlide config) start the NGlide config and set it to the resolution of your choice. If you set it to a widescreen resolution, (you can set it to your desktop res) it will run all games that use 3dfx (voodoo) at that res.

If you happen to come across the problem where the game just stops working for some reason, follow these instructions.

Go into your Steam Library Folder, and find your Freespace folder. Mine was in D:\SteamLibrary\SteamApps\common\Freespace\ ... Then go into your players folder and then into the Single folder. So now, you should be in something along the lines of \SteamLibrary\SteamApps\common\Freespace\Players\Single ... Move everything you see there onto the desktop. DO NOT DELETE IT! Just move it to the desktop. Run the launcher, set your vid card and run the game. BUT DO NOT MAKE A PROFILE. As soon as you come to the first screen, quit the game and then move the files that you moved to the desktop, back into the \Single directory and run the game.

I don't know why it is that it happens, but it's almost as if the files become broken in some way and when you reestablish the config and then copy them all back, it works.

Downloaded nglide and the game still doesn't work for me...FS2 also does not work for me. Not sure steam released these when it seems like everyone has had to download 3rd party programs to run it. Are there any other solutions?

I think nGlide only fixes graphics problems, like textures and frame stutter.

NGlide merely emulates the old Voodoo drivers. Nothing more nor less. If your computer is unable to run an emulator for whatever reason, you're unfortunately ♥♥♥♥ out of luck running the game smoothly as far as I know. Sorry to hear about that because as I said, there is nothing worse than not being able to run a game you have just paid for. Especially in Steam, because they are pieces of crap when it comes to refunding money. They are money grabbers, not money givers.

Try running msconfig and limit maximum ram to 3096 then reboot.
Remember to unset this for normal operation followed by another restart.

Alternatively try the freespace SCP.

FS 1 and 2 retail CD versions work fine with D3D.

Freespace: the Great War did NOT work on my Win7 64bit system until I installed nGlide. Thank you very much. :-)

Install the SCP. Not only does it provide a major overhaul that is faithful, it allows access to dozens of great mods, some of which are even better than the original game.

I'm running Windows 10 in resolution 1920 x 1080. To run Freespace I do the following:
1. Install nglide
2. Launch nglide as admin and set Option Screen resolution to 1024 x 768
3. Launch Steam
4. Right click Freespace and select Properties
5. Go LOCAL FILES -> BROWSE LOCAL FILES
6. Right click FreeSpace.exe, select Properties, and on Compatibility tab set to Windows XP (Service Pack 3) and Run this program as an administrator
7. Right click FS.exe, select Properties, and on Compatibility tab set to Windows XP (Service Pack 3) and Run this program as an administrator
8. In Steam hit PLAY
9. On the Freespace loader screen select Settings
10. Select Detect video and then select option Direct 3D - Primary Display Driver

Then Freespace runs correctly!

Sooo this is gonna be a big necro, but this worked like a charm for me, I have GTA3, GTA Vice City, and Freespace: The Great War and none of these would work, the game window would pop up and the screen would flash and then the game would shut down, so far it's worked for Freespace, here's hoping it works for GTA3 GTA Vice City, as well as the original Rainbow Six!!

More necro

Can't start the game in DirectX mode, froze when I tried to enter my name to start a profile.

Downloaded NGlide, installed it. Start game again, ran config, redetect, selected 3DFX. Start game... and it worked.

No need to set compat, nothing.

I can try the admin/ compat thing to make it run native DirectX, I guess.

Thank you. NGlide worked for me also. I just wish MP still worked since I didn't have internet service back when the game came out.

Whie NGlide solution works, a much BETTER solution is FS Open which can be used to run FS1 campaign with original data (or even the tweaked version)
taiji2078 May 17, 2018 @ 8:30am
NGlide was the only option to run FS1 on Windows 10 / 64 bits. On Direct 3D the game was hanging dead. Thank you Dessnr for your post ! :steamhappy:
