Descent: Freespace - The Great War

Descent: Freespace - The Great War

Crashes on startup, Win8 x64-bit
Whether I detect for hardware or enable 3D acceleration or not, when I launch the game, all the shows up is the upper-left corner zoomed into whatever last appeared on the screen, and the only method of getting out of this is to restart or sign out, via ctrl-alt-delete. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but it didn't seem to do anything.

Help?

It still isn't resolved. Sigh.

I am also having a similar if not this exact problem. I am running Windows 8 and whenever I click play on this game it zooms my desktop into a pixilated low resolution and Ctr-Alt-Del tells me that the game is not responding.

If someone could help us to get this game running I would be very grateful.

I just tried your suggestion Grenadesonfire but after trying it in the compatibility mode it still gave me the same result I got trying it without the compatibility mode.

when the game launcher opens, click setup and make sure Direct 3D - Primary Display Driver is selected from the 3D Video Card drop down. This fixed it for me.

That did not fix it.. I ended up going to the FreeSpace.exe and ran the "Run compatibilty troubleshooter" and that worked. It changed it to WinXP SP2. I then changed it back to no compatibility mode and is still working fine. THANKS FOR THE HELP !!!!! This game is awesome!

Yes!! I'm having the same problem too. I'm of my favorite classic game on Steam, downloaded it and can't play it... This needs to be fix.
