How to: play online, get levels, and connect to the community
Hello, Steam Descenters!

Believe it or not, the original community that surrounded Descent is still around and playing online -- I play competitively every day, with folks who have been playing this game more or less continuously since it came out!

I'd like to help point you toward the active Descent community, in case you're interested in joining us.

For fun, here are some videos of some good pilots playing:

To play online, you'll definitely need Rebirth (a source port), probably need Retro Mod (another source port), and you'll want some of the more commonly played levels.Assuming you already have a copy of the game (from GOG or Steam), if you're on Windows, this installer will give you access to all of those things: http://www.dxx-rebirth.com/download/dxx/user/afuturepilot/download.php?f=DXX-Rebirth_Setup.exe

If you're on a Mac or on Linux, you'll need to download Rebirth directly from http://www.dxx-rebirth.com

If you'd like to play locally with friends or family, the Rebirth version will work out of the box on your home network. Just host a mutliplayer game from the main menu and join it.

If you'd like to connect with the competitive community online, your best bet is to connect with the Descent Rangers (http://www.descentrangers.com). Show up on their Mumble server and ask for help. They're friendly. Someone will probably be glad to show you around the mines. :)

If you'd like to play over the internet with friends . . . this is actually somewhat technically involved. Your best bet here is still to connect with Rangers and ask for help. But essentially, you'll want to be running Rebirth, and whoever is hosting will need to set up port forwarding on their home router.

You can find me under the pilot name 'Lothar'. I hope to see you in the mines!

Some useful links:

Descent Rangers -- A fun group with players of many skill levels; you can find 1 on 1 games, larger games, cooperative play. Very friendly to non-members. If you want to connect with other players and get your game set up, stop by their (open) Mumble server.

Descent Champion's Ladder -- Highly competitive group of 1v1 ladder players. The best pilots in the game right now play here! Stop by the forum for help or training; browse around to get recordings of incredible competitive games.

Descent Bulliten Board -- One of the oldest community forums for the game, still alive and kicking! Meet pilots, get technical help, learn about the game.

Descent Valhalla -- Repository for older levels and articles. The best place to look for old school maps, a good set of tutorials on basic tactics, tips on controller setup. http://www.descentvalhalla.com/

One final thought:

There are a lot of us still around who have been playing and building Descent-related projects (levels, mods, websites, etc.) If you're having trouble getting something to work right, you'll find a lot more of us on the Rebirth forums and the Descent Rangers Mumble server. Feel free to drop in!

When you first launch the installer, it lets you select the components you want to install. Make sure "D2X-Rebirth" is UNCHECKED (it is checked by default).

If you just want to play single player with the Rebirth improvements, all you need is D1X-Rebirth.

I really hope we can find a way to get this stickied.

It seems like about half of the threads are "how do I ..." questions that are answered in this one.
Blarget2 Feb 12, 2014 @ 5:00pm
Well if we keep responding to this thread, aparently it keeps getting added to the top. I am not sure if that is moraly accepted around here though. Bumping threads and whatnot.

It would amuse me profoundly to get banned for trying to be helpful.
Blarget2 Feb 13, 2014 @ 7:01pm
Yes, that would be.

I'm only going to be playing singleplayer. I've seen some people mention that source is better than DosBox, although I'm not familiar with that. Could someone give me a quick rundown/walkthrough?
Blarget2 Feb 14, 2014 @ 12:41am
Define what you mean by source? If you mean, the descent source code, then I am not sure what you mean by better. if you want to play Descent without dosbox though, I suggest following Lothar's tutorial.

I'm not too familiar with the Steam discussion boards to be honest, but if we can get threads stickied this would definitely be a good candidate.
