Descent

Descent

Forgive my ignorance, but....
Okay, I admit was never very good as this game at age 9, my dad and cousin were much better. My whole family loved this game, but for the life of me I can't really remember how to master the mouse + keyboard controls. Keyboard only is stiff as hell. I'm used to the smooth mouse movements in Half-Life to look around and the keys to turn. There doesn't appear to be a mouse-look option in the controls, though (or am I just screen-blind?). I've figured out how to move a little, but it's still really rough to move smoothly. Any tips?

Also, is there a way to SAVE my games??? There's no set option for load/save in any of the control options!

Any help would be greatly appreciated for a nastalgic '80s baby. Thanks! <3

Hey! Saving can be done by hitting Alt+F3 or F4, i dont remember. lol
Press F1 to see the menu controls in game.
For Mouse, go to Options/Controls and select "Mouse",
now you can play with Mouse+Keyboard. [Press Space for select.]

The Mouse is really slow. Modify the "sensitivity=" in the dosbox conf for fixed that.
Go to mouse options and inverted the Up/Down look. "Pitch U/D [F/B] [N] to Pitch U/D [F/B] [Y]".

Sorry for my english.

Could anyone give more detailed instructions on how to make the mouse sensitivity better and how to invert vertical look back? Thanks

My plan is to use Xpadder and an xbox one controller. Should be good. If you like old DOS games but want to use your controllers, I highly recommend Xpadder unless something else better has come along to replace it.

The lack of an invert Y axis option for the mouse made keyboard and mouse controls unviable for me.

I think I did try to play that game with a controller once. It just doesn't feel as good. I remember having to place one of my hands to movement keys, and the other on the controller in order to aim + shoot. It was more awful than keyboard and mouse.
Hardcore Descent fans back then used dual joystick or joystick and pedal combos like u would find for helicopter sims.
Theres still people out there that say that its the best way to experience the 6dof games.
I for one am fine with wasd and mouse.

DosBox actually has a built-in keyboard and gamepad mapper you can access by quickly pressing Ctrl-F1 before the game starts, using it you can remap any key to a 360 controller, or even remap different keys to each other in case some game has a really cumbersome default layout.

You guys don't play this game without DX1-XL or at least D1 Rebirth?

I usually play it with D1 Rebirth, though for some reason the music playback has gotten really weird for me in there, CD audio plays much more consistently using DosBox, and for Descent 2 I've mounted the Vertigo CD in there as well in order to get its soundtrack, whereas neither D1X-XL nor Rebirth currently handle that stuff well. I wish it could just handle that stuff without having to repackage HOG files.

to me
Accelerate W
Decelerate-Revert S
Slide (strafe) Left A, Right D
Ascend Space
Descend Left Ctrl
Invert mouse (which is up = up )
Higher dpi on the mouse so bit quicker turn

Took me 20 years to find out this is all I should've needed.
