First review on a game I really enjoy.
I have been a long time fan of computer games since Doom and Wolfenstein 3D. I have played all types of computer games and I have followed the Mech Warrior franchise as well. There simply is no comparing any other game (including mechs) to Hawken. It is simply one of a kind and has its own genuine feel like Team fortress 2, Don't Starve, or Jedi Knights II Jedi Outcast. I strongly recommend downloading it and playing it for the experience alone if nothing else.
I played Hawken during the first 3 months of open beta and took a break until January this year and have been playing ever since. From my 3 months of experience with the old game developers, Adhesive Games and Meteor Entertainment were incredibly slow to respond to the community.
Right now, the new developers are completely different. Developers from Reloaded Games have jumped on teamspeak and have had several Q&A sessions with both long time devoted members of the community and more casual players like me. You can find these sessions on youtube and twitch. The forums have been restored, mayhem and fight club servers are running and I have definitely noticed a rise in the population. The new developers have been very active in listening to the community.
"The developers say what they do and do what they say."
The new developers ask for the community's input to make important decisions. They explain their current line of thought, outline preliminary expectations and options and set reasonable deadlines for community feedback usually around 3 days to a week depending on the issue. They follow up. The developers say what they do and do what they say. They act based on our feedback and their expertise. I am very optimistic about what the next 3 months will bring as the developers work their way through the code.
The game has relatively low complexity but amazing depth once you figure out the basics(dodging, detonating projectiles, using cover). You are given the CRT starter mech that is essentially the strongest mech in the game. I have only mastered this type of mech (CRT/Assault) but I have been actively trying other mechs. Each class of mech feels completely different from one another in terms of strategy but the basics are still the same.
Game modes include the typical deathmatch and team deathmatch but also include missile assault (capture and hold) and siege mode where you collect energy to launch a ship that deals damage to and ultimately destroys an enemy base while you fight for control for an anti-air turret that brings these ships down just as quickly as they launched.
Seriously download the game (for free) and try it out. Hawken is an amazing gem that deserves at least a try.
Thanks for reading and I hope you found this review helpful,
