At first, this game ran head-on into the polygon ceiling. Now, ten years or so later since the base game came out in 2004 and after the abysmal mobile game, the general opinion RollerCoaster Tycoon 3
now is that it has definitely been the highest point of the entire franchise.
Graphics-wise, it was great back in it's heyday and it (somewhat) still is now. Gameplay-wise, it's definitely a colossal upgrade from 2
with more rides and even the ability to ride them yourself. You can even build zoos and swimming pools (provided you have both expansion packs, which this game does come with) if you'd prefer to. Scenery can be somewhat limited, but the surprising thing is that mods exist - and this mostly consists of custom scenery. Which, if you know what you're doing, can be easy to make yourself. Plus, there's all sorts of secret tricks the developers left in, including custom camera sequences and even the ability to make your own fireworks for firework shows.
My only criticisms when it comes to this game are the following:
- Somewhat clumsy controls. It can be a bit of a hassle at points trying to get
- If your computer isn't that good, then this game becomes rather slow unless you tone down the visual effects.
- Scenarios aren't that good compared to 1 and 2. If you know what you're doing, they can be very easily cleared and the only things you get from them are pre-fab coaster designs that shouldn't have been locked to begin with.
- Guest AI can be rather stupid at times.
Aside from those problems, it's still an excellent game by today's standards. I could talk about this game all day, but if you're a long-time simulation fan, amusement park fan or someone who likes to create stuff, then this game is most definitely for you.
