Windows 8.1 + RCT3 = Failure
Yeah yeah, I know. Windows 8.1 is a piece of trash. I don't want to hear about it.

Until last night, when Microsoft forced 8.1 down my throat, I could play RCT3 via Steam just fine (Using Windows 8[.0]).
Now, when the game tries to boot in, it crashes. It changes the screen resolution (from 1980x1080 to its set resolution 1440x900) the screen flashes to black (LCD off), then to powered black (LCD on), which I am pretty sure is DirectX launching. and I can see it changes the mouse pointer to its custom one. But then, it immediately crashes with the typical "Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 has stopped working" windows error box.

I have all the latest Windows updates, including those pertaining to the 8.1 launch bugs.
I deleted and re-downloaded the game from scratch, after I read it might be related to registry keys, no success.
I updated my drivers (specifically the graphics driver) to the most recent ones, no success
I tried launching in Compatibility mode (Win 8, Win 7, and Win XP sp 3) and get nowhere.

Unfortunately, I do not have any recent system restore points from pre-8.1 recent enough for me to revert back to 8.0

I did read somewhere that DirectX9 might not be working, but I thought RCT3 runs on DirectX10

Does anyone know what I can do?

System Specs:
Manufacturer: Sager
Processor: Intel I7-4700MQ
RAM: 16GB
System type 64bit OS, x64-based processor
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770M (Driver v 331.65)

Sorry to hear that bud. Windows 8.1 uses both DirectX3D and a new addon called DirectX2D. However, there is a way to do so. You must make a recovery drive of all your files, then get the ORINGIAL Windows 8.0 installation CD or download, then insert the disc in. The windows 8 installer will come up, do what it says, it will revert back to 8.0 from 8.1. Or, if you own 8.1 Pro, you have downgrade rights to go back to Windows 7. Hopefully it works out.
:)

Really? What did you do different?

what compatability mode did you try ? if you used say Win 7 try the others out like Win XP or Win 2000 or 95. Thats what i would do first. Next try opening the game's option file or config file and make changes to it.......you have nothing to lose by making changes.

try running the actual execution file located in the RCT3 directory and NOT the desktop shortcut that steam installs

i got it working, installed it, hit play, played it. Not sure it's a RCT windows 8.1 fault since that's what I'm using, perhaps a driver fault for your system on 8.1?

Im not experiencing the problem what so ever, and i have recently installed RCT3 on 8.1. Are you running this on a surface computer?
