It cited the writing as bad (calling me out by name, hehe), the jokes not landing, and the gameplay being mediocre. If I remember correctly, it doesn't mention the art or atmosphere. While I don't agree, It's not stuff I would argue against. I'm just surprised and bummed the game was given a 3. I mean, I have seen barbie games get higher scores =P
To put how much the metacritic scores means for game sales in perspective. The instant the metacritic score went live and linked to Spates steam page (automatic), the daily sales (which were already horrendous) dropped 90%. And even though I was able to get the metacritic score off the steam page after about a week, the damage seems done. It was essentially the nail in the coffin.
In a technical stand point it's a solid game, there were few bugs/glitches/etc, the aesthetic/art are beautiful, and the platforming is also quite enjoyable. So don't overthink that. I'm playing the game right now and it's been a great experience.
I really hope you don't keep looking at review scores (too frequently), HIGH OR LOW because honestly it'll suck the life/time out of you. I know that looking for constructive criticism is good, but working yourself over one review is really bad. Soon instead of being proud of your product you'll stay up pondering why someone would say that about your game or where maybe you may have messed up. That cycle is toxic, and will just make you sad. Sometimes after you make a game the best thing to do is not really think about what reviewers say/metacritic scores (especially metacritic scores cause the way it aggregates scores is really stupid). Maybe look up a let's play or a youtube video of someone playing the game and enjoying it. That in it itself I swear will be much more satisfying that seeing a number that says 10/10. A genuine reaction of people enjoying your product will honestly bring a smile to any creator's face :)
Anyhow personally I think spate is a really great game, and I will reccomend it to my friends have a nice day and I hope you continue to make more fantastic games!
