Performance Issues
It is clear that some (many?) users are experiencing performance issues with the game, some more severe than others.

Many people have found they resolve if you turn down/off some of the graphics settings. It looks like the game's autodetection may be a little bit optimistic when it selects settings for you. Myself, I had big problems until I turned down AO to Tile AO, turned off an effect or two, turned down a couple things. Other people report changing from MSAA to FXAA being a big improvement. Turning off vsync in the game can also help; if you want the framerate limitation, use adaptive vsync in the nvidia control panel (if you're on nvidia).

Please use this thread to report your problems. It will be most helpful if you can report your specs (including OS), what changes to settings you've tried, and a description of the problems. If you're below minimum specs, reports probably aren't that helpful.

We ask that everyone remember the forum rules, and remain respectful in this thread. Slagging each other off is not acceptable and will not be tolerated. Swearing is not allowed, and evading the language filter will not be tolerated. All of the usual rules apply.

Other threads on this subject may be locked or merged here, at our discretion. Threads with much rule-breaking in are less likely to be merged, while those with helpful, constructive information are more likely to be merged.

Additional note: some people have experienced an improvement by installing the game on the same logical drive as Steam. If you are experiencing problems and have the game installed on a different logical drive, try moving it, maybe?

Additional suggestion from user: the game seems to run much more smoothly when started in debug mode from the SDK tools.

Stutters and choppiness. Not entirely unique to XCOM 2, but some users experience unpleasant stuttering, intermitten freezing (or intermittent not-being-frozen), and that sort of thing, when they have a USB network adapter connected (usually a tethered cellphone or UB wi-fi). The quick fix is to disconnect it, but that obviously would generally remove your internet connection. There have been multiple reports that switching to windowed mode and back to full screen improves performance.

This thread is about performance problems, not crashes or failures to start. There's another thread for that.

New Note: 2K has made an official statement on the subject:

"We are aware some players have experienced performance issues while playing XCOM 2, and we are looking into them and gathering more information from users. We want everyone to have the best experience possible, and will continue supporting the title with upcoming patches."

I have a Geforce 970, i5 3.40 GHZ, 8GB ram, running windows 10... The game splutters and the FPS drop lots. In game when the Sectoid creature uses it's ability I usually have to wait at leat 15 seconds before It actually does it's effects.

~The game is great btw, however one my system I should not have to look at dropping graphic settings for a game like this.

Personally, I've found that running a GTX 980/i5-4670k/12GB RAM that the game starts running fine providing I turn everything to max but keep AA off. After an hour, though, the slow-downs set in, it's mostly on night maps with a lot of shadows (tried turning shadow quality down but made virtually no difference).

So it's mostly an "over time" issue. Memory leak perhaps? By and large I'm getting well over 60fps to start with, but it ends up being around 40fps 3 hours in. No crashes though.

Devs, I'm not sure if this is what you've done, this is only my observation: this looks very similar to the previous X-COM in terms of Engine, but menus and other things look a lot smaller, almost like they're being downscaled somehow. It reminds me of running a game in 4k downscaled to 1080p, where everything appears sharper and smaller, like it's meant for a bigger screen, but suffers performance-wise quite badly. Is this something the engine is doing? Could it be because you're now supporting 4k screens?

I miss the larger sizes from the previous game.

Edit: As Sebastian above mentioned, it takes a long time for turns to play out. Whenever a creature appears, it'll freeze on it for about 5 seconds before the creature decides where it wants to move. On turn ends, it does the same thing. It's like watching a video file while you're running a virus scan, everything works until suddenly it doesn't and then the frame freezes while it decides what it wants to do, then things suddenly spring back into action again. Some AI calculation seems to be taking a long time to process.

GTX 980 TI (Zotac Amp Extreme), i5 3470 (3.2 or 3.4ghz), 16gb DDR3 1600 with Win10....the game has a decent bit of framerate lose in places (soldier selection and randomly in places), stutters and mini-stalls on encounters with enemies BUT I still love it, I know you can easily fix the performance jib-jab.

Thank you for your great work (That's if the Dev team reads this lol). :-)

XCom2 installed on SSD

- Only way for me to reach 60FPS was to set the game in BORDERLESS WINDOW. In fullscreen mode, no matter what setting I change, wont run at more than 23FPS.

- Had to turn AA down to FXAA

- VSYNC in this game is broken. They need to implement the triple buffer VSYNC option.

- Random crashes. Black screen with sound. Had to reset the PC.

- In-engine cutscenes are locked at 30FPS.

- Low FPS un the Avenger view (ant colony) with GPU usage never going beyond 75%

- Random stutter in-game and in the Avenger section.

- This is an UE3 game. And old engine with a lot of games using it... It's not like is new technology of some kind. There ARE optimization issues, performance issues and there is no way a game with this graphics will tank performance on PCs far beyond the recommended spec. Also this is a PC exclusive. I guess they rushed the game without enough testing, feels unpolished. Besides the performance issues there are camera problems, Random freezes after some turns... Black screen on alien's turns... Looks like Firaxis took a lesson from WB with MK-X and Batman AK (3 games using the same UE3 engine) in optimizing code for PC. We need patches. 60USD game!

- Many of this problems where indentified by previews a couple of months ago, and nevertheless, they are still present in the final code. Is Firaxis working on this issues?

Also... Are you a community manager? How is that you have no information at all? No info on patch... Not even the issues with this game identified.

Run fine with everything on minimal, just turned the "Action camera" off and I was able to play almost every map.. I just can't launch map after saving Commander. When You are in Skyranger it just crash to desktop after briefing.

With these settings, i should run XCOM 2 with EVERYTHING MAXED, but nope, denied. So yes, bad optimization is true, and no one can denied it, not even Firaxis, so they MUST FIX this

Originally was running normally, but After some point Steam error 41 and APPCRASH and APPHANGB1 was rise. so i tried 6 reboot and 2 re-install, 3 VGA driver remove-reinstall, 3 .net remove-reinstall, 3 Direct X remove-reinstall, 3 VCR remove-reinstall, change the language, etc...
but XCOM does not accept me to play.

i5 2500k 3.3GHz (not overclocked), GTX960, 16gb ram, Win 7. Noticing long pauses before some enemies act, like it takes them a long time to think about what they have to do (and yet they somehow managed to beat the human race lol).

I notice this most with sectoids, but that could just be because you see sectoids a lot compared to more advanced aliens early game (I just started seeing mutons). Also crazy load times between start / end of mission. CPU barely being used. It just seems to hang there.

This will be a great game when it is finished. It runs like a really bad PC port, which is crazy as it's supposed to be a PC exclusive.

Really bad FPS drops at ANY setting.

Cutscenes run at a jittery 28fps

Yet another game released in a broken state.

I've been getting random spikes in CPU usage/temperature during missions. While at the avenger (ant farm) screen, my temps usually stick around 60 C but in missions it will randomly spike up to 90+. It's even caused a few blue screens. Is this something that is likely to be fixed by patching/optimization?

50-60 fps with GTX690 on almost everything maxed in missions with drops to 20 sometimes. BUT constant 20-25 fps on base, character customisation screen etc.

Play on High settings, getting about 40-60 FPS on missions, after about hour of game it start stuttering, long answer of game, and fps drops
AA off, VSYNC off, get 1-2 crash of game in 16 hours with black screen

I'm get 35FPS with all settings at max and AA off and vsync off in 4K with G-Sync on.
Don't have any issues at all.

Turned vsync off, AA off, set shadows and effects to med/low, turned off action camera. Game cannot handle switching screens. Freezes loading into a mission, freezes loading "alien activity" in missions, freezes when you move the base, freezes when you scan, freezes between rooms onboard the base.

Can't play for more than 30 minutes without it bricking, have installed and reinstalled multiple times, temps on everything internal are fine sitting below 40 degrees C so they aren't even being stressed.

Anything less than 60 fps with that setup is an issue. It may run fine for you to play it hitch-free but it should be running immensely better.
