edit: ok here is me trying to give a ♥♥♥♥: a lot of match-ups will greatly favor one player over the other one based on their civilisation and the randomly generated maps exacerbate this problem, you can compare it to poker:
imagine you can simply not play a hand without losing anything (no big blinds no small blinds nothing) just because you don't like your starting cards, you can simply quit upon getting 72o or something and only play out KK, AA and so forth, people who play everything (the way it's supposed to be) will be put at an unfair advantage and the only way to level the playing field is for them to utilize the same strategy resulting in nearly everyone quitting the majority of matches if they don't like their chances
i.e. you often do not start with starting hunt on a map like oasis (zebras can be out of starting line of sight), so if you start the game and do not see your hunt it means that your opponent may have an advantage over you because he may have immediately scouted the zebras because they are in his starting line of sight, the proper +EV (expected value) play in this situation is to quit instantly because in the best case scenario your opponent doesn't start with his hunt either (+0EV), but if you start with hunt it's always better to play it out because your opponent in the best case scenario will not start with hunt (+>0EV)
then there's just match-ups you may not be able to win, i.e. marsh is a much much much better map for isis vs. poseidon than oasis is so if I'm playing against a poseidon player what stops me from quitting until I get something like marsh or anatolia (and what stops him from quitting until he gets something like oasis or medit)?
obvious necessity
This has killed Ladder games in AOM single haddedly and many players have left the game because of it. Please fix this!
The player leaving a ranked game should take responsibility for wasting others' time and ruining the multiplayer experience.
Noobmura is on a row with his posts. Also please remove the option to make regular games rated, rated games should only be done via Quick Search.
The last time I tried 1v1 ladder, my opponents instantly quit 5 times in a row (I managed to catch one of them in chat, and he said that it was because he didn't want to play vs Isis). Ranked should be a measure of skill against all matchups, and IQs let people cheese a single strong matchup and completely avoid others. That to me, completely destroys any meaning the rankings might have - and it wastes my time, having to queue and load again.
Other notes - Setting up your own game should not give any points. This is extremely easy to abuse - just get an alt account to lose to you multiple times in a row, or w/e. Only games made by the matchmaking system should be rated.
- some maps and spawns are terribly imbalanced, but that fix can come after the basics of an honest ranking system have been fixed. It's impossible to get honest statistics on the Isis vs Poseidon matchup on Oasis (for example) if every Isis simply dodges that map. etc
