The solution I am working on will be that if your status is anything but online or looking for game, then it will prompt you the first time letting you know why you are not auto joined into the group chat, There will be a button on the UI to give you the option of joining it at anytime and thus changing your friends status to online. So after this popup is seen once, it will not show again and in future runs of the game you'll just be in chat offline mode by default if your status is not one of the two above. This way if you want to stay offline you can, but you will not be able to participate in the group chat. This is something steam does automatically so the only option we have is to not join you to chat if you want to stay offline.
Just as a note, I do not know if you want to participate in the BETA 1 testing, but it does not have chat enabled yet so it does not change your status at the moment. BETA 2 will include chat but the solution I outlined above will be in BETA 2 as well.
I will update here when I am able to get the live game updated with this feature.
UPDATE: I have the changes implemented so we just have to test them and then we can push an update to the live game client.
Thanks again for being an awesome developer.
